I bought an old square wringer washer. I think its a Maytag (It's been painted and there is no logo). The Serial # is: 273031L The lid is not hinged. Its just a square lid with a gasket around the edges. This is what happened. When I transported this in my van, it was resting sideways on an angle. It sat for 4 days in hot heat (i was waiting for help from my son). We pulled it out and flipped it upside down and there a a thick black oil or grease inside the underbelly, about a cup or 2. I think it came out the arm that bolts to the chassis that runs to the wringer gear. My question is, 1)Is this suppose to be a sealed unit? 2) or is there a gasket where it bolts at? 3) Do I need to replace this gear oil or will it be ok? 4) if I do, How do I refill it?

J2L from your description. Grease from weep hole

There is heavy gear grease in the gear housing in the bottom of the wringer post. Tilting the machine sideways and being in a hot vehicle of course the grease got runny and leaked out the hole on top of the horizontal housing going to the gear box.

I would think grease would pour out turning it upside down.
That would be my assumption.

Tilting these machines in any way can cause leaking, Best transport is leaning slightly on the front of the machine.. Mine leaks a little even doing that.

There is no way to replace the grease with out tearing it apart. take The horizontal housing off repack the gears in the vertical housing. I think 80-90 gear lube. Buy or make new gaskets and reassemble.
Or it maybe ok to test it BUT
Before starting the machine.
inspect the machine belts hoses ect.

Put HOT HOT water in the tub. This softens the Gear grease in the gear box under the tub. Let it sit for 1 or 2 hours, Check for leaks. If no leaks plug it in and see what happens.
Is this your machine?? random snag from internet.
