Venus, Laundress, Bethann, Carol,
What's a hot item for 14 y.o. girls this Christmas. I plan on giving my niece and nephew the token money as usual because I was never home, this being the first time in over 20 yrs. But I still want to get them something to open when the come over on Christmas day for dinner.
I guess the same question for a 16 y.o. boy.

I am the uncle of

two now twenty something young women.
(There is a nephew-in-law in four weeks, and an adopted niece).

I have had best Christmas success with gift cards and a small token item.

For example: 25.00 (USD) Borders card, and a 3.99 "Hello Kitty" something.

The same for the nephew, but a different store, and maybe not a "Hello Kitty" item.

Some ideas for the token item: keychain flashlights. Stainless steel car mugs. Battery chargers with rechargable AA batteries.......

I adopted this method when they were teenagers, and I didn't know their music anymore.

"Creative" is often more fun for the giver than the recipient.

16 year olds

I'm 14, keep in mind.
I would probably want a gift card or certificate. The new iPod shuffle looks nice too, if you want to really go out there. But I would go for the gift cards/certificates. I would rather choose my own gift than have an adult guess what I would want and choose for me TYVM!

Shop if you dare.....

Hey Pete!

Just getting ready to shut all down for the night, when I saw your post! I don't know what is more difficult; a lady buying for a 16 year old boy or a fellow having to purchase something for a 14 year old girl. Either way....never buy something too personal. We'll just file away that birth control pill suggestion (David, I'm coming after you with a switch!). ;-)

I would consider music download cards and phone cards. Do they have a game system? Perhaps the latest game might pique their interest. Most 14 and 16 year olds I know love American Eagle, Abercrombie, Hollister, and the like. A gift card from one of those places would be great, as would be one from Visa or American Express. If a gift card seems a bit cold, how about attaching it, from a ribbon, to a fun stuffed animal for her and tucking it into a wallet for him? The possibilities are endless.....and priceless! LOL

Good luck with your search - this one's easy, believe me. You can handle it with your usual savoire faire!

Last time I checked I was a girl!

Veg....go out on a date or something will ya? ;-)

Pete,

I have to agree with Venus 110% on that Abercrombie, Hollister, American Eagle gift cards, and such. My 15 y/o won't buy clothes from anywhere else. (much to my pocketbooks disappointment)

Best Buy is a good choice for music cd's and such. If there is a large mall near you, they also have American Express "Mall" cards that can be loaded up with buckaroos and spent all throughout the mall at any of the stores within.

A good stocking stuffer, is Starbucks Gift cards too. I know my daughter and her friends LOVE that stuff, while trolling the shopping malls, talking on their cells phones, checking out boys. LOL

I won't comment on David's birth-control...but I was thinking the same thing when I first read this. LOL
Time's are a changing....

With teenagers now a days, it's alot easier to give them the GC, or money so they can buy what they want. And so much easier on the gift giver.

Good luck, and happy holidays!

I'll take a look around our mall here, it aint much, this isn't a big town so those big name stores probably don't exist. We have Walmart, Sears and Zellers and I can just hear the ewwww if I gave her a Walmart gc LOL But like I said I'll be giving her some cash anyways so will just have to find some trinket to go along with it..

Don't forget that if you don't have an Abercrombie or whatever locally, they can still use the gift cards for catalog orders.

How about sending them to one of those places that takes "glamour shots"? Girls usually like that sort of thing, but you have to stand by and make sure they don't make the kids look like hookers. Somehow, those places confuse "glamour" with "trashy".

At the risk of being taken seriously. ?

The Girl:
Birth control pills came to mind first, I agree
perhaps the morning after pill,
a credit card,
I'm guessing a Victorias Secret gift certificate is more appropriate at this age these days, and yeah,
a horny 17 year old Jr. from her high school for a night, complete with a red bow.
gift certicates for a beef-cake strip club.
a bible(LOLOL)

The Boy:
tickets to Vegas with a few thousand in 'spending' cash.
a gun
a motorbike
gift certificate for Best Buy or Circuit City
a cel phone(right, lol)
the morning after pill.
hand cuffs
a personal invitation from the host at the Itchy Kitty Strip joint.
poppers

Aren't you glad that I'm not related to you?

Seriously, I'm sure I would make a good parent. I would just to need to double check my decisions. My intentions are good!

(In reality, I have this feeling kids THESE days have easy access to any of these things that most of us here once thought of as exclusive.)

Glamour Shots!

That's another great idea. I have seen some and you are right. Some look like hookers and some are really beautiful. I suppose it depends what trailer park the sales clerk comes from.

Sorry, don't mean to offend anyone about the trailer park comment, but I think you get my drift.

Great idea Veg!!

Gifts for girls!

My niece is growing up fast! My gift to her and her step sister are gift cards from American Eagle and Gap! The sales girls there showed me all the clothes and things for 12 and 13 year olds but i opted for the gift cards. God forbid i should get something that would be returned or worse stuck in a drawer for the next 10 years! Great advice Venus!
