Oh yeah, and when I got my DSL from Verizon, it couldn't have gone any smoother. I didn't need to be home and they regularly notified me by e-mail of the order's progress and the work actually got done sooner than the original due date. I couldn't have asked for a more painless experience. Much as everybody in my area loved to hate Verizon (they are an also-ran telco in northern Calif) and wanted Pacific Bell (now AT&T after being SBC for a while) instead, I have to say that Verizon has really turned things around and I have no complaints.

I have verizon for cell service and i think there are super.. All though we have no choices like that here, i wish we did.. All we have is Bellsouth/Att and Charter Communications... Ickkk
We have Bell Sotuh DSL and i love it... Its $30 a month, but that includes a wireless gateway and everything.. Not bad

A Good Word About Cox
I'm very pleased with my high-speed internet from Cox Cable. I get a discount (it's bundled with my HDTV cable package) and it's truly fast. Plus, I get very good service, whether on the Internet or on the phone. Cox is one of the cable Internet providers that did well in recent Consumer Reports surveys, and I have to second that for those who live in areas where Cox is available--including my home town of Las Vegas.

DSL Speed . . .
I checked mine and it worked out to 2273 download and 414 upload. It may not be as fast as a cable modem, but it is pretty reliable which is important as it is used daily for business. It is fast enough to keep my favorite web radio stations going all day while using the net for other purposes.
To get a cable modem I'd have to deal with Time Warner, who replaced Adelphia who replaced Century Cablevision. They ALL suck big time . . . some of the highest prices in the City of LA (but they know you don't get a choice, it is determined by your neighborhood), and lousy service with frequent outages. Time Warner just took over and as their first big change moved about 10 channels to their pricey digital cable and then their rep insisted on the phone that this was a better value because once we upgraded to digital cable we'd get even more channels; he just couldn't comprehend how 10 fewer channels for the same money represented worse value not better. So we now have Direct TV and pay less for more channels and vastly better picture quality . . . dishes are sprouting in my neighborhood like toadstools after a rainstorm.

Cox is definitely a competitor to the telephone providers and has made some serious inroads in places like San Diego and it appears Las Vegas also. Whatever they are doing right, I wish the other cable companies would follow their lead.

You see, the telecos ARE the provider for Internet connectivity to the mom-and-pop ISPs. The local customers pay the ISP, the ISP pays the teleco. So the telecos get it all in the end. Or is it the ISPs that get it "in the end?"
*They* can sell DSL for $12.99/month because *they* have their corporate machine carrying the load. But we can't stay in business selling dial-up for $20/month, not just because of losing customers to *them* but also because of the outrageous costs *they* charge for the incoming connectivity lines to our network. There are also the "little" ancillary costs like running an e-mail server.
So, as of April 1, I lose a job I've had for the past 8.5 years.

Dad, when good ol' boys like Ed Whitacre of SBC ->-> AT&T have good ol' boy buddies and fellow Texans in the White House appointing favorable cabinet members and commission chairmen, the scenario you described is what can happen. I am really sorry to hear about your pending layoff. This is more about mom & pop ISP providers than mom and pop phone companies. Nobody cares about the small phone companies since they mainly provide residential service which has never been profitable even for the big boys, so they'll continue to exist. But Ed just can't seem to get enough revenue and will steamroll over any small operation that might be siphoning some off. Still, you've got to appreciate a guy who took the lamest of the baby bells and turned it into such a power house that it ended up eating its former parent company. Too bad that means the lamest of Ma Bell's kids was the one who ended up filling Ma's shoes. Welcome to the "new" AT&T everybody. It's not going away any time soon. Just be sure not to mistake it for the old Ma Bell. The two companies couldn't be more different despite sharing the same name.
