Hey all, I know the main topic of convo in this thread should belong in Vacland but Im not yet a member there (I intend to at some pint but not just yet.... waiting til I have something vintage maybe my dream Hoover Senior 652E IIRC the model number of my Nans Blue one)

Anyways there aree more pics of Mums almost finished kitchen coming up INCL the great new fridge freezer we got.

But first things first,

Under any circumstances have I not joined the cylinder cleaners appreciation club! I much still prefer an upright (who dosnt these days? LOL) but yesterday the curiosity of a Miele Cylinder got the better of me.
So it was off to currys and comet where i narrowed it down to 2 models, the Pet TT and the S5210.

Because Im too much of an upright fan I wont ever be without one so the option of turbo brushes and the such isnt really an issue, the well designed big floor attachment is more than ample at removing pet hairs and other dirt so the uber trendy black and silver S5210 came home with me from Comet, £139.99.

Its got great suction and built very well, It even put the Electrolux to shame after I hoovered with that then went over the caprpet with the Miele!

Ive used it mainly on the Economy/Daily setting which is perfect for the daily once over and if im honest the full 2200w was a bit too strong and i found the wand a touch to hard to push over thick carpets. Its very quiet in operation and the soft start motor is a bonus even though it seems to take an age to register in your ears that its actually on and running hehe.

Only 1 gripe ive found and thats user error in the fact I couldnt do a top to bottom clean in 1 swoop. Its too much for my back and after attempting to do top to bottom, I gave up after 15 minutes to give my aching back a rest. Not something I get with the upright.

Lots of unsuaual touches you wouldnt know about until yoou read the instruction manual like the static electricity metal inlay on the handle, not something you come across on most vacs but I guess if Miele put it there it must be of use, but Ive never had a problem with static when cleaning up fine dust on other cleaners. Could this be because its so powerful Mieles do charge the particles as they hurl up the tubes?

Filters are interchangeable and I can add a HEPA filter if I wish to do so, dont think il bother as the 7 stage filtration system is more than adeqaute.

I think this is worth a good laugh though, whilst chosing in Currys the sales assistant so deperately tried to get me to buy the dyson cylinder with telescopic wrap around hose on the Dyson 5 year gurantee and the fact is bagless despite me saying several times it was a Miele i wanted for the excellent quality.
the only thing she could say to that was and I quote..... "Miele is NOT a name she would recommnd for Quality"???????? she didnt get the sale!

Comet were much more up to date with Miele philosophy and the sales gut who served me seemed to think it was an excellent choice which he was right.
Only snag was he did attempt to sell me an extra warranty twice but he soon gave up when I pressed with the words "Im buying Miele so I dont want one" LOL

anyway heres some pics as promised of the 2 new toys I got to play with yesterday,

Nick

sales assistant

This sales assistant should be sacked!
How can she even dare to say so??? lol
MIELE was, is and (hopefully) will be THE brand-name for quality!
Good ol' German one - from Westphalia! (I'm Westphalian, too......smile!!)

Ralf

The bag system, good bags, hefty price tag.

These bags really remind me of the bags my Nanas Electrolux Airstream upright takes.

The Honeycomb effect too...

Ralf,

That saleslady wants shooting, she has her story wrong way round. I was a major Dyson fan until I used my Electrolux, now I wouldnt pay Dyson prices for something so unreliable even with a 5 yr Gurantee.... you will need it LOL

The electrolux is just as good as a Dyson, the carpets are clean and in fact before christmas I used a friends Dyson over the carpets the Electrolux had been over and the Dyson couldnt pull any more out.
High Air Watts power but its not needed becuase there is only so much you can get out.

Having said that the Miele pulled more out than the Electrolux but then did I miss parts of the room that I then did with the Miele I wonder?
Wasnt really a fair test I think on reflection.

anyways some more pics of Mums Kitchen coming up incl the FF

Nick

Samsung American FF FF.

Good for the money and full of features.

I like it, although im not sure id buy one for myself but Mums happy and thats what counts

Last night id not drunk so much water in such a small amount of time, the water filter attached to the inlet hose is fab as we have awful tasting tap water here.

the door in the background leads to the utility room on the right, and on the left is the old garage with the Elcold Chest Freezer peeking in LOL!

an afterthought

Ralf,

NEVER mention Westphalia around me.... How I love your hams! LOL

Its very sad when even in the best Delicatessen we have here, Westpahlian hams are not available.

I dont know why because IMHO they are one of the best types of ham I think you can get, oh so tasty!

Ahhh my mouth is watering so much thinking of it now Grrrr hehehe.

Nick

Westphalian ham

Hi, Nick! Yeah, you are sooo right!!
I love that ham - if we meet once, I will bring a good package of it with me!!
I like ham a lot! My favourites are: Westphalian, Black-Forest ham, Serrano, Iberico and Parma for smoked or dried ham and I love also cooked ham with a good self-made mayonnaise on my sandwich! mmmmmmmmmmmmm..........
Not to mention all these delicious sausages from Westphalia.... or Germany in general...... yummmmmmmmmmmmy!

Ralf

Very nice cleaner and kitchen, Nick! :-)

In order for your Mum to allow you to keep these cleaners, you should have to do all the housework! ;-)

Love the FF FF! :-) Very smart! :-) You’ll never tear me away from my little dinky Miele fridge, though! ;-) Would love a FF FF like that, though – I know Mum would! :-) Trouble, is, our kitchen is all worktops, and there’s not the scope – what with me, etc. – to really redo it. Also, we may move within a couple of years or so. Don’t worry, folks (hehe) – I’m not leaving the UK – it’ll probably only be a bit further north, like Lincolnshire or Norfolk, etc. Yes, Jon – I’ll be closer than ever! Muahahaha! :-) LOL :-) Oi! Who was that who just said, “Oh, damn!” ;-) LOL

Your Mum’s kitchen, Nick, reminds me of my Nan’s at her home, which was brand=speaking new – it was a new house. I think it’s the shape of the room you have there. Our kitchen here is probably not as wide, but it is long, stitching from the front to the back of the house – it rakes up nearly half of the downstairs, running down one side of the house! LOL

Anyway, keep us up to date! :-) I have some pictures of our kitchen, but I have to seek permission from the manager of said kitchen before putting them here! ;-)

Take care. :-)

Regards,

Carl :-)

Nick and Ralf,

Before I go… about the hams… I can understand what you mean, Nick, although I’ve never tasted that! hehe :-) I think the problem we have in the UK – and you probably know better than me on this, I would think, or I’d hope so, Nick! :-) hehe – is that the delicatessen counters, supermarkets and much of the general public have no real taste. I’m not saying I do, or that I’m ‘better’, but I have become better at trying new foods. No – not just whether to have white soda bread or brown soda bread…! ;-)

I know Dad has tried to get certain things and found they are no longer available because “there’s no demand”. Well, apart from us! LOL We’re not certainly not that adventurous with food ourselves, but we do try = and I know we eat better than some of the rest of our family! :-)

I have to eat quite bland food because of my condition, so that usually centres around things like pasta, potatoes, soda bread, some meats (organic where possible), goats’ products (milk, cheese, etc.) and more. I am not too hot on vegetables, but I do eat potatoes, sweetcorn, carrots and broccoli (not enough), as well as some others! LOL I love fruit and can scoff loads of it, but I still don’t eat enough of it.

Anyway, nice for me to have a rant! :-) I may be wrong about people having no taste, although going by what some parents feed their children these days, no wonder this is little taste abound.

(I sound like a horrible food snob with no right to be so! :-))

Regards,

Carl :-)

Nick, nought to stop you posting on Vacuumland. I'll get me one of those Mieles eventually as well, they're great vacs, well built and quiet to boot.
Your mums kitchen looks great as well, plenty of room up on top of those cabinets for a mixer and blender collection.

Carl

Carl, you are right to do so! I'm a real gourmet and do cooking every night! I never use any productes than natural ones - no artificial stuff and no industrial productes at all ans also I'm very strict with my adjudgement on food - only the best possible is good enough but that does not mean the most expensive!!

Ralf

hiya nick,
great vaccuum, and great kitchen too, that FF is so huge, the water and ice thing is very cool tho. Nice to see our mutual kettle :P
Hope every things goods with u, I've dropped u an email so hope you will reply soon :)
Take care,
Matt

Nick, is your freezer temperature actually set to -25 °C (-13 °F), or it just seems so in the pictures? Why strain the cooling system to that extent? Wouldn't -18 °C be cold enough to properly store frozen foods?

Emilio

Not known for quality???

Hi Nick

Congratulations on your Miele purchase. Was that sales assistant on crack or something???? Miele not known for quality???? After 20 years my first Miele vacuum cleaner, Bluestar, had to be retired after many years of trouble free service. I also recently purchase a 5210 to relace it & I enjoy it more than my previous Miele, especially with the turbo head. In Australia this model comes in a light blue colour, although I do prefer yours in the charcoal.colour. Miele is definitely my favourite brand. Only wish my current front loader was a Miele. We something to look forward to I guess. Anyway Nick happy vacuuming! Bruce

Fridge and Freezer Termpatures

Hi, Emilio. :-)

Nok can respond later, but I know from experience that thermometers and thermostats are never completely accurate. Also, Nick’s mother’s fridge freezer may, as you have indicated, simply be given a reading of the current temperature and not what Nick or his family may have chosen to set the freezer’s thermostat at.

I have to wireless thermometers in my Miele fridge and my Hotpoint freezer. The Miele fridge is giving the following reading from the wireless digital thermometer I fitted to its

Miele Larder Fridge (No Icebox) (2006 Model)

Current temperature: 3°C

Maximum over the past few hours: 11°C
Minimum over the past few hours: 1°C

A fridge’s internal temperature, depending on the location of each shelf, should be between 4°C and 5°C (preferably 4°C). The upper limit of 5°C may be appropriate for some foods, but some foods require a slightly lower temperature. This is generally dependent on the shelf, with the coldest area being at the bottom of the fridge but above the salad tray. A fridge should not be too cold of course or else it becomes a small freezer! -)

We carefully adjusted the fridge over a period of a few days, following the instructions. After experimenting with the control, the correct temperature range of 3°C to 4°C was reached and recorded on the digital thermometer over a few days. This has remained quite static even with varying amounts of food inside.

Hotpoint Freezer (2002 Model)

Current temperature: -21°C

Maximum over the past few hours: -10°C
Minimum over the past few hours: -24°C

The current temperature of our often hits -22°C, and the minimum temperature often goes right down to -25°C – the same as what Nick’s appears to be showing. This freezer does not have any adjustment for its thermostat – it is fixed. All credit to the Hotpoint factory in Peterborough – just up the road from us – for getting this right. :-)

A freezer’s insides should be -18°C or even colder – say, -21°C. As you can see above, my freezer manages this comfortably. Indeed the temperature often reads about 20°C.

All I can say is, whilst waiting for Nick to reply, is that thermometer’s and thermostats’ readings cannot always be taken literally – some can be several degrees out at times. Nick’s freezers may simply be giving a reading of its current temperature n the same way my separate thermostat does. In his case, the freezer may be in between ‘cycles’, whereby it will soon warm up slightly towards the range -18°C to -21°C.

There could of course be another explanation… Nick may be hiding something nasty in there that requires a *really* deep freeze! ;-) He has been awfully quiet lately, so… come on, Nick – out with it! ;-)

Take care. :-)

Regards,

Carl :-)

I forgot to add that some foods in a fridge requite a temperature of 4°C, not just 5°C, so be warned! :-)

The lower part of a fridge, excluding the salad/vegetable area, should be 4°C, and this is where meat, fish, poultry, etc., should be stored. Towards the higher parts of the fridge, the temperature may be 5°C. However, this depends on the storage institutions for each item – they can vary.

Also, amongst my rather verbose previous message, what I meant o say was that fridges’ and freezers’ temperatures can fluctuate regardless of whether the door is opened regularly or not. Having more food stored inside can affect the operation of the appliance, which may require adjustment of the controls, though digital controls do not usually require such adjustments if more food is tored.

Carl :-)

Carl, thank you for your "verbose" response, LOL! You are right, both in freezers and in refrigerators the inside temperatures fluctuates widely within an operation cycle. This is more evident in automatic defrost units, which this Samsung refrigerator is.

I asked my question to Nick because I recently visited a friend's beautiful and enormous brand new house, all brand new kitchen and laundry equipment everywhere, and he had the exact same refrigerator as Nick's mother. Guess the freezer temperature shown on the display? -25 °C! Technology wise my friend is a "ten toe" kind of guy, so I asked him if he had actually set the unit's temperature ever (both refrigerator side and freezer side, which can be adjusted individually) and he obviously responded, "No, I haven't touched anything, I just plugged it as delivered". Needles to say, the freezer temperature was set to -25 °C, and I adjusted it back to -20 °C. I guess I did the right thing for the sake of the unit's life.

Nick! Explain Yourself! ;-)

Hi, Emilio. :-)

I hope I did not come across as lecturing. :-)

I will have words with Nick when I next see him so he can explain himself! LOL ;-) Warming the planet up, running appliances into the ground… What’s he playing at?! ;-) LOL hehe

I know what you’ve about some people simply plugging appliances in from new and not reading the instructions to set them up properly. :-) I’ll see what Nick has to say for himself!!! ;-) He’ll probably come back on here very soon once he gets on the computer to respond for himself. :-)

Take care. :-)

Regards,

Carl :-)

pleased as punch with all the new toys

Theres alot of reasons the freezer temp is set to max, I have all my freezers set to max for safety of which is an essay in its own right,

When i get time to say why i will post it. :-) im in a rush ATM.

I will quickly say though, the filtered chilled water on tap made my hangover last sunday morning a nice pleasant hangover. If thats possible!

Well last night I had the Miele out to clean Mums house from top to bottom.
The decorating work is almost done except for the plaster board and new window to go in the new dining room, and needless to say mums not really bothered cleaning properly until last night.

Dust has been kept reasonably under control with the Hoover Piss Pure Power and the Morphy Richrds cyclone effort daily.
The carpets were as usual prior to a deep clean that mum does weekly in the areas not being converted ~(we keep the doors shut on the dusty areas to stop muck being traipsed. minimal gets into the other rooms) but I have to say the Miele did a grand job, It pulled out a fair bit of dirt but the best bit was not having it come out of the filtation system like it always has done with the other 2 cleaners.

Again I found it hard to look at a carpet that dosnt have the tram line giveaways of an upright and I wasnt convinced the carpet was clean until I checked what was in the bag.
A good 1/4 of the bag was filled with the muck Id pulled out. Tonight when I give the living room a quick freshen up for the weekend Il use the Electrolux and see what happens then.

But I dont expect much, least il get me tram lines though LOL.

Nick

Its worth saying though, the new living room isnt like the living room I used to help Mum Hoover on a Sunday as a child. In fact the house dosnt feel like home anymore because its so different.

time will help it heal and settle down back to being home,

Sounds odd but I was listening to my MP3 player whilst cleaning last night and purposely I flicked it onto a song that reminds me of doing such a job in the early 90s with out Hoover Turbomaster.

This song was in the charts and almost constantly on the radio or TV and whenever I hear it now it always takes me back to my childood days.

I meant childhood days as in the memory of the of said Hoovering job lol.

Just me getting way excuted LOL.

another tune that also takes me back is this fond memory........ oh deary me!

Nick

My goodness! :-)

I can remember what I was getting up to when I heard those songs!

The River Of Dreams: I was doing my homework, and this track was on constantly, as you said, Nick.

Swamp Thin: I heard this when I first became unwell, so imy memories of that time are rather melancholy.

I was 13 or 14 when The River Of Dreams first appeared (1993?) and 15 when Swamp Thing was played (1994?).

I became ill in May 1994 (glandular fever) and September 1994 (ME), although I did have pneumonia in spring 1993.

The Rivers of Dreams reminds me of when I didn’t have to worry about anything and so before I became unwell. I remember sitting there doing my homework on a day pretty much like this – nice and sunny. :-) I would be talking to Mum whilst she was preparing tea, and my sister would be in the living room watching TV. Dad wouldn’t be home from work until a bit later, but I’d be working away on my homework, as well as doing some extra things for school (I used to help in the computer rooms as a pupil).

Swamp Thing tends to remind me of the time when I was in limbo, where I had only been off school for a very short while and was not sure what was happening to me, even though I had a diagnosis of glandular fever. Teachers sent work home for me – they posted it or Dad would pick it up for me – but I couldn’t even look at any of it, really.

So, a contrast there, I guess – one year where I was ploughing on without any problems; the next where I was stuck, and thing have never been the same since.

But I can still smile. I just wish at times that I was not so ‘trapped’, but I know it could be worse, so I have to settle for this. :-) Memories of songs from different eras greatly cheer me up because I can at least still listen to them, although I could not for many years.

Crumbs – listening to those has really put me on the spot and made me think, and now my mind is thinking about other eras and songs. :-)

Regards,

Carl :-)
