Hi Nick

Congratulations on your Miele purchase. Was that sales assistant on crack or something???? Miele not known for quality???? After 20 years my first Miele vacuum cleaner, Bluestar, had to be retired after many years of trouble free service. I also recently purchase a 5210 to relace it & I enjoy it more than my previous Miele, especially with the turbo head. In Australia this model comes in a light blue colour, although I do prefer yours in the charcoal.colour. Miele is definitely my favourite brand. Only wish my current front loader was a Miele. We something to look forward to I guess. Anyway Nick happy vacuuming! Bruce

Fridge and Freezer Termpatures

Hi, Emilio.

Nok can respond later, but I know from experience that thermometers and thermostats are never completely accurate. Also, Nick’s mother’s fridge freezer may, as you have indicated, simply be given a reading of the current temperature and not what Nick or his family may have chosen to set the freezer’s thermostat at.

I have to wireless thermometers in my Miele fridge and my Hotpoint freezer. The Miele fridge is giving the following reading from the wireless digital thermometer I fitted to its

Miele Larder Fridge (No Icebox) (2006 Model)

Current temperature: 3°C

Maximum over the past few hours: 11°C
Minimum over the past few hours: 1°C

A fridge’s internal temperature, depending on the location of each shelf, should be between 4°C and 5°C (preferably 4°C). The upper limit of 5°C may be appropriate for some foods, but some foods require a slightly lower temperature. This is generally dependent on the shelf, with the coldest area being at the bottom of the fridge but above the salad tray. A fridge should not be too cold of course or else it becomes a small freezer! -)

We carefully adjusted the fridge over a period of a few days, following the instructions. After experimenting with the control, the correct temperature range of 3°C to 4°C was reached and recorded on the digital thermometer over a few days. This has remained quite static even with varying amounts of food inside.

Hotpoint Freezer (2002 Model)

Current temperature: -21°C

Maximum over the past few hours: -10°C
Minimum over the past few hours: -24°C

The current temperature of our often hits -22°C, and the minimum temperature often goes right down to -25°C – the same as what Nick’s appears to be showing. This freezer does not have any adjustment for its thermostat – it is fixed. All credit to the Hotpoint factory in Peterborough – just up the road from us – for getting this right.

A freezer’s insides should be -18°C or even colder – say, -21°C. As you can see above, my freezer manages this comfortably. Indeed the temperature often reads about 20°C.

All I can say is, whilst waiting for Nick to reply, is that thermometer’s and thermostats’ readings cannot always be taken literally – some can be several degrees out at times. Nick’s freezers may simply be giving a reading of its current temperature n the same way my separate thermostat does. In his case, the freezer may be in between ‘cycles’, whereby it will soon warm up slightly towards the range -18°C to -21°C.

There could of course be another explanation… Nick may be hiding something nasty in there that requires a *really* deep freeze! ;-) He has been awfully quiet lately, so… come on, Nick – out with it! ;-)

I forgot to add that some foods in a fridge requite a temperature of 4°C, not just 5°C, so be warned!

The lower part of a fridge, excluding the salad/vegetable area, should be 4°C, and this is where meat, fish, poultry, etc., should be stored. Towards the higher parts of the fridge, the temperature may be 5°C. However, this depends on the storage institutions for each item – they can vary.

Also, amongst my rather verbose previous message, what I meant o say was that fridges’ and freezers’ temperatures can fluctuate regardless of whether the door is opened regularly or not. Having more food stored inside can affect the operation of the appliance, which may require adjustment of the controls, though digital controls do not usually require such adjustments if more food is tored.

Carl, thank you for your "verbose" response, LOL! You are right, both in freezers and in refrigerators the inside temperatures fluctuates widely within an operation cycle. This is more evident in automatic defrost units, which this Samsung refrigerator is.

I asked my question to Nick because I recently visited a friend's beautiful and enormous brand new house, all brand new kitchen and laundry equipment everywhere, and he had the exact same refrigerator as Nick's mother. Guess the freezer temperature shown on the display? -25 °C! Technology wise my friend is a "ten toe" kind of guy, so I asked him if he had actually set the unit's temperature ever (both refrigerator side and freezer side, which can be adjusted individually) and he obviously responded, "No, I haven't touched anything, I just plugged it as delivered". Needles to say, the freezer temperature was set to -25 °C, and I adjusted it back to -20 °C. I guess I did the right thing for the sake of the unit's life.

I will have words with Nick when I next see him so he can explain himself! LOL ;-) Warming the planet up, running appliances into the ground… What’s he playing at?! ;-) LOL hehe

I know what you’ve about some people simply plugging appliances in from new and not reading the instructions to set them up properly. I’ll see what Nick has to say for himself!!! ;-) He’ll probably come back on here very soon once he gets on the computer to respond for himself.

pleased as punch with all the new toys

Theres alot of reasons the freezer temp is set to max, I have all my freezers set to max for safety of which is an essay in its own right,

When i get time to say why i will post it. im in a rush ATM.

I will quickly say though, the filtered chilled water on tap made my hangover last sunday morning a nice pleasant hangover. If thats possible!

Well last night I had the Miele out to clean Mums house from top to bottom.
The decorating work is almost done except for the plaster board and new window to go in the new dining room, and needless to say mums not really bothered cleaning properly until last night.

Dust has been kept reasonably under control with the Hoover Piss Pure Power and the Morphy Richrds cyclone effort daily.
The carpets were as usual prior to a deep clean that mum does weekly in the areas not being converted ~(we keep the doors shut on the dusty areas to stop muck being traipsed. minimal gets into the other rooms) but I have to say the Miele did a grand job, It pulled out a fair bit of dirt but the best bit was not having it come out of the filtation system like it always has done with the other 2 cleaners.

Again I found it hard to look at a carpet that dosnt have the tram line giveaways of an upright and I wasnt convinced the carpet was clean until I checked what was in the bag.
A good 1/4 of the bag was filled with the muck Id pulled out. Tonight when I give the living room a quick freshen up for the weekend Il use the Electrolux and see what happens then.

But I dont expect much, least il get me tram lines though LOL.

Its worth saying though, the new living room isnt like the living room I used to help Mum Hoover on a Sunday as a child. In fact the house dosnt feel like home anymore because its so different.

Sounds odd but I was listening to my MP3 player whilst cleaning last night and purposely I flicked it onto a song that reminds me of doing such a job in the early 90s with out Hoover Turbomaster.

This song was in the charts and almost constantly on the radio or TV and whenever I hear it now it always takes me back to my childood days.

My goodness!

I can remember what I was getting up to when I heard those songs!

The River Of Dreams: I was doing my homework, and this track was on constantly, as you said, Nick.

Swamp Thin: I heard this when I first became unwell, so imy memories of that time are rather melancholy.

I was 13 or 14 when The River Of Dreams first appeared (1993?) and 15 when Swamp Thing was played (1994?).

I became ill in May 1994 (glandular fever) and September 1994 (ME), although I did have pneumonia in spring 1993.

The Rivers of Dreams reminds me of when I didn’t have to worry about anything and so before I became unwell. I remember sitting there doing my homework on a day pretty much like this – nice and sunny. I would be talking to Mum whilst she was preparing tea, and my sister would be in the living room watching TV. Dad wouldn’t be home from work until a bit later, but I’d be working away on my homework, as well as doing some extra things for school (I used to help in the computer rooms as a pupil).

Swamp Thing tends to remind me of the time when I was in limbo, where I had only been off school for a very short while and was not sure what was happening to me, even though I had a diagnosis of glandular fever. Teachers sent work home for me – they posted it or Dad would pick it up for me – but I couldn’t even look at any of it, really.

So, a contrast there, I guess – one year where I was ploughing on without any problems; the next where I was stuck, and thing have never been the same since.

But I can still smile. I just wish at times that I was not so ‘trapped’, but I know it could be worse, so I have to settle for this. Memories of songs from different eras greatly cheer me up because I can at least still listen to them, although I could not for many years.

Crumbs – listening to those has really put me on the spot and made me think, and now my mind is thinking about other eras and songs.
