Hmm, though not in the exact forms, we do seem to have more than a few of those futuristic ideas available to us today. The automatic floor cleaner is the Roomba for carpets, or the Scooba for hard floors. The electronic oven could be interpreted as either the standard microwave oven, or the GE advantium, which cooks by a combination of radiant light and microwave. The dish drawer dishwasher does not roll to the table, but many homes now seem to be keeping a seperate set of dishes in each, using one while the other washes, rather than empty and reload a standard dishwasher. The cooktop is most similar to an induction cooktop, though with an induction cooktop the pan does get hot. Any home computer can take the place of the kitchen center to control things throughout the house with the proper wiring installed, as well as serving the tv and recipe file functions shown. The freezer drawer is an obvious option as a built in, as is the refrigerator drawer used in the video for vegetables.

The only things I saw that we really dont have an equivalent of is that nifty built in tv dinner dispenser and cooker, as well as the refrigerator that lowers from above, and the frozen food/drink/ice dispenser.

The styling of the appliances does not follow the styling ideas for the time the video was produced, but it is currently possible to build a functional version of the kitchen in the video, if money is no issue. Personally I prefer the styling of the appliances in the video.

On one episode of the General Electric Theater, they had a meal maker device where you selected the menu and the frozen casseroles moved from the freezer to the thermal oven and baked for most of the hour then were served. Not really exciting when you considered all of the prior preparation and positioning in the freezer necessary to achieve the results. I think this would be the same way with ingredients having to be loaded in specific places to make all of this work. The mixer is too over the top. The poor combo was the only thing that really existed and was a good demonstration of how difficult it is to bring dream appliances into reality.

I wonder if that little floor vac-washer will be able to clean up the remnants of the shutters and the frame in front of the combo washer-dryer when it goes off-balance the first time!

Greg, the aptly named anti-excursion switch should save nearby fixtures in models after 1957. In 1957, the steel cross piece was too weak to bump the switch and some machines did go a travelling so this model might have been a home wrecker.

A fun but certainly dated film. More fun would have been sticking Julia Child in that kitchen and telling her "OK honey, whip us up some gourmet treats." As soon as that floor cleaner came out of it's den she would have caught it and thrown it in her lobster pot.

Funny that the one thing they couldn't fully automate was laundry. I was expecting a receptacle in which you could drop soiled clothes where they'd be sorted, pretreated, laundered, dried, ironed and folded.
