I'm charting the new frontier of pre rinse freedom and am in awe of what my dishwasher can do with a pot filmed with dried, stuck grits. The problem seems to be that my GE dishwasher leaves the grits everywhere, not just in the bottoms of the top shelf glasses.

My husband said he unloaded a load, rinsed and scrubbed grits off, reloaded and dishwashed again.

This morning, I am experimenting with washing with the heat dry off, then if the grits are all over everything, simply running the dishwasher all over again.

Before any of you reply, I'll probably know the answer to a)whether or not the first run can sometimes remove all of the grits from everything and b)whether a second dishwasher run will do it. I'm stil interested in your answers, input and ideas. There is probably something I haven't thought of yet.

I'm guessing that if prewashing before the first run is a waste of water, if the second run gets all the grits off, then running the dishwasher a second time would save more water than rinsing after the first wash, yes?

Probably, if the dishwasher cannot get the grits off most of the time, I'll just handwash the grits dishes...but it seems like I had an OK grits load before my dearest got involved.

Best,
Sarah

Your dishwasher does not have a filter. It is done by the dilution method. I would honestly pre-rinse all the grits dishes and pot or at the very least scrape them almost clean. You'll have to do this with mashed taters too.

explains why I liked my Whirlpool...

So this probably explains why I liked the first dishwasher I ever bought--a 2002 Whirlpool with a disposer in it--and I hate this GE.

How is the vintage harvest gold Hobart Kitchen Aid with push buttons that's in my basement going to handle this problem?

Thanks,
Sarah

Whirlpool Dishwashers

Does anyone remember the ads from Whirlpool when they loaded their dishwasher with dishes, threw in coffee grounds and then put a whole pizza in and ran it? Their claim was their filter system captured all the food particles in their filter and then flushed it away so no food was left at the end of the cycle. Seems to me these were in the '70s sometime.

The KA does have a filter but the grits and potato particles are smaller than the filter holes. You may have some left over. Depending on the model KA it may use more water than the GE which would enhance the cleaning. Either way you will get cleaner dishes with the KA.

That seems more like a Power Clean ad from the 80's although I could be wrong.

The power clean had centrifugal particle separation. After the food was chopped up by the grinder it was shot into the round separator that had different chambers where the food was spun out from the water. When it drained it sucked all the food out of the chamber and down the drain.

I've started running a "rinse and hold" and then a "pots and pan" cycle on my GE Nautilus at the cabin. This is the worst dw I have ever had. My Fridgiare at home will clean paint off and never leaves stuff on the dishes.

GE Dishwasher Pumps

I haven't torn into a GE dishwasher in many years, but back in the late 80's we used to notice a lot of pump impellars half eaten away within 2 years of installation. We presumed that it was due to the homeowner using too much powdered detergent and cold starting the machine. IE, not running hot water at the faucet before starting. We began instructing users to only use gel dishwasher detergent and the problem gradually went away.

Maybe your GE pump impellar needs to be replaced...

I guess i must be lucky when it comes to dishwashers. I have a GE 1200, and it washes everything, with no problems. The only time I have any problems, is with these new detergents, but not the machine itself. It seems to hold it's own on most things we throw at it. Maybe luck?
Hugs,
David

MrB,
Interesting thought. The DW is only three years old and used maybe once a weekend, but I will check impeller. The biggest PIA is the lack of top sprayer to help get the crap out of glass bottoms.
