Sandy--Chase & Sanborn has stayed the same quality? If so, that's almost a shock. I remember hearing that coffee in general went bad in the 70s. One coffee expert even said that the average brand of canned coffee was quite decent once, and then one day, cost cutting hit...and that was that.

John:

I still find Chase & Sanborn acceptable for a mass-market brand, which is something I can't say across the board. What happened to coffee is that a lot of Robusta beans are now found in mass-market blends; they don't have the same flavour as the Arabicas found in better coffee. Robusta varieties are hardier coffee trees, more impervious to crop loss, but the beans aren't as good and they have more caffeine. Arabicas make for somewhat riskier coffee crops, but they're far tastier, and therefore more expensive. Guess which beans Corporate America prefers?

Five O'Clock's Bokar is still extremely good, but just try to find it at the grocery store!

Sandy--It's amazing for a mass market brand to be even "acceptable." Most of the brands I've encountered range from between "absolutely undrinkably terrible" to (at best) "bad." I've noticed that even the supposedly 100% arabica version of some mass market brands can be disappointing.
