Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Not only is this a Hoover wringer but I think, (and no doubt I will be corrected if this is wrong), that is the first washing machine model Hoover ever made in the UK. That really is a little bit of history and for it to turn up 12,000 miles away from 'home' is amazing!!

Yes indeedy

Paul, you are correct this was the first washing machine produced by Hoover in the UK, it is no surprise that one has turned up in Aus (although I have seen them before) as they were exported left, right and centre as part of the post WW2 export drive to help repay the war debt. Hard to tell, but this may be an early version as the agitator is not black but chrome

This extract is from 1952

Here it is in action

This one belongs to ChesterMike. Oh so simple, no heater, no timer no pump. I understand that the design was seen my Charles Colston (Hoover UK managing director) whilst visiting one of the Hoover "boot camps" and is an American design, although not, I believe, by Hoover. Colston brought the design back to the UK and I beleieve that it was origionally planned to be built a Perivale, but WW2 intervened, so it did not appear until 1948.

Mike as postulated, and correctly I believe, that this machine was responsible for completely changing the UK washing machine market as a result of its compact size and low price, where it would fit into the smallest kitchen (typically British) leading to similar sized models from Servis and (rather later) Hotpoint
