Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Louis, that window is so cool. Talk about after dinner fun. How strong is the spray on it?

Chris, you did such a job on that one. All you need is the box...

Louis - very cool dishwasher. I wish we could see a close up of those arms in the bottom. Is this your machine?

Chris - That Westinghouse dishwasher looks museum quality now. Does it wash as good as it looks? Is that the timer down by the name on the lower front door?

Maytag RR

My vote goes to the Maytag Reverse Rack machines that were made from 1970 until the late 80s. After they went to the reversing pump belt drive design in about 1974 they were basically the same machine all the way until the end of production (early models had a direct drive recirculating pump with a separate drain pump). They had phenomenal loading capacity and cleaned very well. The down side was that they were noisy when they were washing and they sounded like a freight train while draining! But then again, the 5 fills, wash/rinses and drains of the regular cycle only lasted about 35 minutes.

My favorite model simply because it was the dishwasher of my childhood was the WU601.

I have one of those awaiting a full refurbishment in my basement....

Favorite of all time, still hunting for one........mid 50's 24" Hotpoint with the Roll R Rack upper rack and the lighted indicator on the lower left side. My late Aunt had a white one in her house when she moved in during 1973, and I just loved how the lower rack set the plates in a circular pattern, and how you could flip the upper rack to load different sized items.

Louis, that is cool.

I agree, Chris, that machine looks "skweeky" clean.  An owner's manual would be the cherry on the sundae.

Louis I wished you had that window model machine
looks like mini wash arms down in the sump area.

My Faverite two vintage machines are Mike's ( Dishwashercrazy ) dishwahers.
The Homart sink diswasher.
Two raw videos.
Homart the pattern on this impeller is pretty amazing.
You wil see no more green on the dishes they vanish.
This one heats and washes and rinses dishes in less then 20 min.

My Dream Dishwasher

A GE Mobile Maid Bowtie impeller with cycle buttons and power shower. Will settle for a BOL though. Someday . PS Chris Very nice indeed. Mike

It's still eluded me, also, but I really like the Kemore top-load roto-rack portables.  The folding upper rack always fascinated me.

Favorite Dishwasher: Our 1961 Westinghouse roll out drawer dishwasher. Unbelievable performance from an impeller machine with no food particle filter. We had soft water, but it never etched our glassware. Everything came out sparkling clean.

Best DW Ever

Everybody knows which one I like but as the Power Clean WPs didn't come out till 1984 that may not be old enough to be considered vintage.

Mark 71 Maytag built in DWs never had a separate drain pump, until the tall tub machines came out around 2000. The very first MT TL portables did have a separate drain pump but they also switched to a one motor that reversed to drain by the time that the built-ins were introduced around 1970. These early MT RR machines were not as noisy as the later belt drive machines, both types of machines had different reliability issues and all MT RR machines left chunks of food in the bottom of the machine so you really had to scrape the dishes when loading. And other than the loading restrictions of not having a real wash arm under the top rack and the huge cut out in the lower rack required for the wash tower these machines when loaded properly cleaned GREAT. But MT abandoned this design on their own because LARGE numbers of consumers did not like them. It can't be blamed on the Government or Whirlpool.
