The Third Time's a Charm!

Turned out I posted the "Adele/Hazel" link in the wrong spot (my bad)...so...

and now "Adele/Hazel" in living colo(u)r!

The first intro was from 1961-62.

This color intro debuted in early 1963 (forgive the grainy picture), just after the introduction of the 1963 1/2 Galaxie 500/XL fastback hardtop that served as the backdrop for the Baxters' photo shoot, but the music was identical!

One of my favorites is the theme from the Late Show - the original from the 50's and 60's - not the dreadful synthesized version of later years. For anyone from outside the NY area - this was the song that opened and closed the WCBS - channel 2 movie that went on from 11:45pm - 1:30am. Since my bedroom in the apartment was literally an alcove off the living room, I was able to lay in bed and watch the movie with my parents 15 feet away.

I always knew the song had a name, but I was surprised to learn who composed and performed the song. It was called "The Syncopated Clock" and was written and performed by Percy Faith and his Orchestra.

Percy Faith . . .

was a hugely talented arranger and band leader. Unfortunately today too many people remember him only for some of the kitschy stuff he did from time to time, but given the vast amount of music he produced in the '50s, '60s, and '70s it would be unfair to expect it all to have aged well. Lots of respected big-band guys did TV work in the '50s and '60s, which is one reason the quality of the music was so high.

Faith didn't actually compose "Syncopated Clock". It was written by Leroy Anderson, another great name in mid-century American popular music. Faith did a great arrangement and performance of the song.

Hmmmm.

I don't watch TV at all any more, but I'll second votes for Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and Green Acres. Also The Rockford Files.

I haven't seen any mention of Dallas (never liked the show, but it had a great theme song), Mannix, All in the Family (Those Were the Days!), or The Jeffersons (Movin' on Up).

Suicide is Painless, from M*A*S*H is a good tune, if melancholy.
