-This year a 2002,Brazilian made,Whirlpool of about 7500 BTU got deployed to the end bedroom.Grabbed at the curb with badly plugged condenser airpath,a good disassembly cleanup and fin combing got it working nicely again.Likely made by Brastemp, used to see these at Menards from about 1999-2003.

I've been considering a window unit for the bedroom, but am concerned about noise level.  I'm currently using a Soleus GL-PAC-08E4 portable unit that I found for sale on Nextdoor classifieds.  I paid $50 for it a little over a year ago, it's fairly quiet and has a relatively small footprint, but I would prefer to regain the floor space it occupies.  A friend of mine paid $100 for a newer, more sleek looking Soleus portable model (also found on ND) three years ago and it's super quiet, runs almost constantly in his bedroom except for a few fall and winter months, and has had no issues whatsoever.  I'm impressed with this make, considering that it's a Chinese product.

My sister has a Toshiba window unit in her TV room that I thought was pretty quiet, but I just visited her last month and realized my Soleus portable makes less noise.  If I can find a window unit that's at least equally quiet as my portable I'll make the switch, but for now I'm happy with the Soleus I scored.

My home is of redwood 1" thick redwood T&G construction, I used to have a Panasonic 10K window unit cooling a large bedroom, the noise and vibration the unit would transfer to the walls was unbearable to the point where I dreaded using the unit.

It's since been replaced with a Daikin mini split unit of the same capacity, the room is actually habitable again, not to mention it can remove enough ambient heat to make the room feel like a meat locker...

I remember the name of commercial cooking appliances well in your avatar as a Fire Inspector for new/renovated restaurants.

The name Blodgett indicated that there was years of reliable service to look forward to, most commercial kitchen designers specified nothing else...many Chefs insisted on the brand.

Jeff, the noise level and vibration is a big issue for me with window units.  The friend I mentioned in my prior post had an old Frigidaire window unit mounted in the window directly above his bed.   Without a headboard, the entire wall resonated behind the pillows.

In my own bedroom, the windows are not above the bed or even on the same wall, so I'm not as concerned about vibration as I am about the fan and compressor noise.  The portable units do a much better job of quieting down their compressors, and that likely has a lot to do with their design.  The "saddle" type units that Pete mentioned above are probably on par with portables for their noise level -- or even quieter, but like he said, they're not cheap either.

I should mention that I have central HVAC, but see no point in maintaining 67 degrees at night throughout the house.  I cool the rest of the house down overnight with window fans, as nights tend to cool down nicely in this area during the summer months, and it's usually below 70 in all other parts of the house by morning.
