Oh god, Honestly I’m starting to think this guy is an idiot

Detergent are mixed differently, some may be stronger, Some may be weaker, so you don’t take the smallest dosage, From, the most concentrated bottle, and you never use that for absolutely everything regardless of detergent brand, one thing I’ve learnt with really dirty laundry, is that sometimes even the recommended dose isn’t enough, and you never use the express cycle leave that stuff alone for when the mother-in-law comes over. Always use at least warm water and if your load is large enough, you should sort it by colour, or garment type, I believe me the Harry unicycle is your friend if you got really dirty stuff, or if you really want to give you laundry, an actual proper wash

Soooo, the entire industry, both washing machine and detergent manufacturers alike, have got it all wrong, despite all their investment and research... Seems to me instead of trying to sell a book, he should get on Kickstarter and launch his own washing machine and detergent brand, and get a chinese manufacturer to actually design and make it for him.

With only one short washing cycle, the washing machine could just have a single button. One press would power it up and set it running, after first filling its tiny dispenser of course, and as it will wash quicker, cleaner, more efficient, use less detergent and be easier to use than anything else on the market, so he should clean up!

I first heard Patric Richardson on NPR on or near Thanksgiving. His tips for removing Thanksgiving meal-related stains seemed sound, relying primarily on oxygen bleach. Much later, I saw a video in which he advised using soap rather than detergent. I suppose soap is fine if you pretreat all stains, have soft water and rinse in warm water. At any rate, the laundry practices of most of us at AW—the true Laundry Guys/Gals—would probably run counter to many of his suggestions.

I'm listening to this podcast...

He's really rallying ALWAYS using express cycle...always... he was asked "is there any time where you may want to use another cycle?" Like if an alien wipes slimy goo all over you? Are you still using the express cycle.. even then? Yes... In his mind.. The washer should only have one button that's always the express cycle with warm water... Like always... always... no matter what kind of filth you're dealing with. Wow!!!

Some things he's not wrong about though... He did say to never use cold...which shocked me. He also said sorting is important (it is)

He seems to be a fan of laundry soap (which isn't detergent)

I don't think so.. He wasn't pushing a certain brand. He was saying it's very difficult to find...He said you can find it in some co-op or specialty stores.. Places like that...

As I listened to him.. I found myself agreeing with some of what he said... while completely cringing at other things.

Patric Richardsons laundry advice

You can’t condense laundry, advice, and methods into quick little sound bites like this anymore than you can tell people to cook everything at the same temperature for the same amount of time and everything would come out perfectly. There are simply far too many variables in different situations to be considered.

The guy is a bit of an idiot, sort of a brief sensation. Hopefully he’ll go down in history of how to do laundry as tiny did Tim did for great music , Lol

Another Brain on DRUGS...

Well, I use whatever amount of detergent is necessary for the load, and I have a sensor-water level system... So I no longer have to eyeball the load if I have an intermittent water level, which I don't--I gave away my not-so-energy-efficient Lady K...

SMH!

I mean, seriously? How do you expect a full dirty smelly sweaty load to get clean on express? And I don't buy that express wash gets the toughest loads cleaned! I don't. No wonder why this Patrick Richardson looks disheveled! Ladies and gentlemen, stick to the normal or heavy duty cycles if it is available and be done with it! If heavy duty is unavailable, stick with normal! I'd use the proper amount of laundry detergent and fabric softener, and bleach on whites. Patrick Richardson, you are a stupid idiot!

Generally...

I use just enough detergent to create a tiny layer of suds that cover around 25% of the water’s surface once the machine is agitating, and then stop there (around 1/3 cup of powder, give or take). I’ve found this approach works great in my 2017 Speed Queen top loader. However, this machine is very different from a modern front loader or an H.E top loader, which is the type of machine I’m assuming the writer is talking about. I’m sure that 2 tablespoons of detergent would be plenty for one of those machines on an auto load sensing cycle. However, that simply won’t cut it in an old school top loader, like most of the machines we have here on AW. A lot of people these days haven’t even seen an old school top loader anymore. Personally, I wouldn’t want to use the quick cycle for everything, especially in a front load machine. Those machines need time in order to clean effectively. He does have a good point about not using cold water, however. I’ll give him credit where it’s due for that.

Adam...

"Leave the express cycle alone". I agree with that statement. I've been trying to tell people. I'd use a pod and just stick to the normal cycle, and fabric softener in the water diluted to turn into a solution during final rinse. And yes, whites need bleach and hot water and time. So, don't believe the hype. I am just as disgusted as all of you on here. I still can't believe it. I bet the people who follow his advice have SO MANY ISSUES with laundry. They try to find a magic bullet to this problem. SMH. Where is common sense?

double post

Sorry for the double post. I have so much to say when it comes to this "expert". I'll use warm or hot waterand maybe cold or cool when the temps are just right, that's it! No speed washing for me as it isn't accurate for me! Exception: when I need a shirt or pair of jeans refreshed quickly. Rant over!
