    Older Toilets and Extra Bolts

In my experience with older toilets those front end bolts are a bit of overkill.  Once the toilet is secured to the drain flange and a bead of caulk applied around the base it isn't going to budge unless the floor is uneven and someone is deliberately trying to "rock the boat."

At What Temp Do You Set Your AC?

Central AC is at 78-80.  I don't so-much need it really cool as dry.  The dehumidifier in the basement runs from March to October, and with the furnace fan set on continuous the house is always comfortable.  Due to lots of mature trees, most of the house is heavily shaded, and it takes a long...

    Help?

If you have the model number (on an ID tag behind the dirt cup usually) you stand a chance of finding the handle part at hesco.   Barring that, it wouldn't look so great but try using a hose clamp.   http://www.elkypro.com/hoops2005/vacuum_parts/regina/94.html

Now that phosphates are gone in dishwasher detergents

The rule about fine china as I have always understood it is that if the decoration is under the glaze and there is no platinum or gold banding then the china is dishwasher safe.  I have put been putting fine china in the dishwasher for many years (as did my mother) with no ill effects.  I don't...

New energy efficiency standards for washers and dishwashers announced

How the heck can clothes get clean if they barely get damp?  My front-loader is already stingy on water, so much so that I often opt for the extra rinse to be sure all the detergent is gone.  I guess I should think about stocking up on spare parts or buy another machine for back-up.  Thank...

    Montgomery Wards "Signature" DW Anyone?

That's exactly like the first dishwasher we had when I was growing up!  It was loud but it held tons of dishes, pots, etc., and everything came out clean!  I can still hear the clicking of the timer as it advanced.

    An electrical question

No electrical skills required! The converter kit is prewired and ready to operate!  Literally, all you need to do is remove the burner assembly and screw the electric one on in its place.  Add a lightbulb, plug it in and let there be light!

    HE detergents....

I never had a sudsing problem with any of the liquid HE detergents I've tried but recently I bought a box of powdered Tide HE and with as little as 1/4 dose plus using the extra rinse option there is a little remnant of suds in the door boot and a faint hint of the detergent scent in the...

    GE Reliability

I got fed-up with my 3 year old Profile fridge and replaced it right before Christmas.  Anything I put in the crisper drawers would freeze, and after two expensive parts replacements the condenser coil area under the floor of the refrigerator section (a bear to access and ridiculously designed)...

    Frigidaire Orbitalwash dishwasher??

It's interesting to see an old idea revived.  Back in the early 70s Frigidaire had a small wash arm on one end of the large wash arm.

How do you hook up a washer in an apartment?

This is what I set up for my mother Mom lives in a seniors only apartment building.  Her kitchen is tiny but the bathroom is big (ADA compliant) so that's where the washer is.   The washer sits close to the tub so she can hang the drain hose on the grab bar over the tub.  I linked two fill...

1930's Magic Chef Gas Range repair

That's a beautiful range! I have a 1931 Magic Chef, bought for my previous house and awaiting a place to be put back into use again in this house.  I highly recommend you contact Jack Santorum at The Old Appliance Club.  That's been my go-to solution for old range issues for years...

    Toilet Tank Issue _ Help

The valve isn't closing completely.  Adjust the screw ever so gently until the hissing stops.  The valve might be getting old or just getting a bit gunked up with sediment.  Sometimes it could be as simple as the water pressure is a little higher than usual.
