They really put the breaks to any new projects. I haven't been able to buy enough groceries, let alone work on or start any projects. I still have the collection, though. The belt-drive Whirlpool portable needs a new motor, or possibly a capacitor. Not sure, all I know is that the...
The first is a bargain
For $50.00, you get a machine that will likely out-last a modern HE front loader. The other $850.00 gets to stay in your wallet: Buy some gas, buy LOTS of steak, upgrade the computer, pay some bills, fix the car. Or, save it for a rainy day. Old top loaders have their...
Too many wringers!
If it was a restored Unimatic, then I would think different. One of the best ways to fool someone into grossly over-paying for something that's only worth a little over scrap value, is to fool them into thinking it's a "rare vintage antique". There are literally thousands...
It's been a couple years since I last visited
But anyway, on with the topic. In spite of the cost of manufacturing, and the final purchase price of a typical 1-18, these machines were built to last for years, perhaps generations. Remember "Alice"? Well, that machine is still a champ and keeps...
The quality
If you're referring to the lighted dials and UV lamps of some of our vintage machines, that was mostly before 1970. Your front loader is a real keeper, as I have an Italian Zerowatt that's roughly the same age, maybe older than your set. They don't make anything like that machine...
In American dollars?
I would say around 94.85 British Pound Sterling. In the States, that translates to roughly $150.00 for a used older model front loader in excellent, clean condition. I would ask that for a matchbox like this, because I believe they were built better than the HE machines...
Good link
Thanks for showing that to us, magic_clean. It was very informative. Dan: From what I remember of these machines, they have a cork-screw agitator similar to some of the last Maytags.

Funny
TrainGuy was going to save up a Frigidaire for me, but I never heard back. Maybe his circumstances improved well enough to not have to sell anything. My guess is as good as anybody's. Matt, at West End Appliance, may have something. I doubt it, but anything is worth a try.

I wonder if actually running the machine would have torn up the transmission? Interesting video, I'm sure he'll be joining our club in about the next 10 years, maybe even less!

Another possibility;
would be to buy a new Speed Queen top loader, and then find a USED dryer at the local Restore Center. Dryers typically last longer than washers, and a good electric one can often be had for a song!

I seriously doubt that anything made after 2007 is going to have any collector value, except for Speed Queens. Maybe. That's because of the new government mandates that eliminate the warm rinse featured on older top loaders. Also, with the lack of attention that many people give to today's HE...
Their longevity is going to depend a lot on parts availability, though. Whirlpool changes the designs of their front loaders like car manufacturers do with their vehicles. There is little parts compatibility among the generations, unlike the standard DD top loader. Whirlpool also has a...
If this is your only front loader and you have two hookups:
First, I would follow the instructions for running your Duet through its cleaning cycle, with bleach. This will help keep any organisms from accumulating too much on the internal components. Wipe the boot dry, and any place that's...
