Yes Peter, that is the way I have always done it. Put one side in first then, holding the lid at about a 45 degree angle, put the ball in the top opening dimple (Not the lid dimple) and push against the ball enough to hold it then remove your finger and push hard until it snaps in place.

I am not sure that the agitators are different for the reason Greg Nunn stated. Both the automatic and wringer have basically the same seal setup. Both should have the air pocket so the seal isn't underwater and the drive shaft doesn't get wet and corroded, even thought the often do. The reason...
