See E-Bay #7178631274. Flat-top filter agitator and "MAYTAG" in "block" style letters leads me to believe this machine early sixties----'62,'63,'64? I notice how Maytag has a water level fill line on the agitator instead of the tub wall. I would have thought they might have standardized and used the same agitator for the automatics.

Someone wake the seller up from that dream! Greg Nunn just explained to me the other reason the agitators were not interchangeable with the automatics----there was an air bubble beneath the wringer model to keep water from running down the agitate shaft. Greg is of the opinion that this is a mid to late fifties machine. It was the "block" style lettering that made me think early sixties.

I am not sure that the agitators are different for the reason Greg Nunn stated. Both the automatic and wringer have basically the same seal setup. Both should have the air pocket so the seal isn't underwater and the drive shaft doesn't get wet and corroded, even thought the often do. The reason they do not interchange is because the splines are higher up the agitator on the automatics, so if you put an automatic agitator in a wringer, the skirt would bottom out before locking down on the locking ring.

I have never seen Maytag wringer before with agitator from Maytag Highlander automatic.

No time to scan and post it now, but the wringer agitators do have a "cup" around the spline and shaft, they added it to be sure the air bubble or block was maintained around the shaft, I'll look it up later after work, it's quite interesting. I have a Maytag "Let's Talk Service" bulletin on it and on the filter agitator, it was an option for the wringer washers.
1964 was the changeover. I wonder why they decided this was so much better than the previous 40 years design?
