    Time for a starch thread!

Dave, Malco sells the starch directly for 22$/6. I agree, Linit is much better than Sta-flo, it seems more concentrated and the finished product has a better hand. We can still buy Argo in these parts, the powder you mix up. So you may look into that as well, it's very cheap. HTH, Todd

Mending a tear in new bedding

That's great to hear! If you have old sheet that would work well. Or a double layer of muslin should be fine. It's very cheap at JoAnn's. Just be sure to prewash it in hot water and dry in a hot dryer to preshrink.

    Household Ammonia in Laundry

I like the lemon too. Can't find Parson's locally but Target sells lemon ammonia for 1.12. Which is at least .70 cheaper than anywhere else. Vinegar will help to neutralise the ammonia smell that the kitties are attracted to.

    Household Ammonia in Laundry

Jim, ammonia is great for fresh, heavy perspiration stains. Just pour it on full strength and let it soak in before your wash. Though a liberal dose in the wash water usually does the trick.Vinegar for old stains, full strength and let soak for several hours or overnight. I was able to strip the...

    Household Ammonia in Laundry

I've used ammonia for upwards of 30 yrs. it's a very effective deodoriser and a pretty good degreaser. I use about a half cup in my front load. If I use ammonia I don't use o2 bleach, I don't like mixing more than one additive in a load. Plus I use it mainly on jeans, socks, towels and t/polo...

Mending a tear in new bedding

3 step zigzag A 3 step zigzag does 3 straight stitches for the zig and 3 more for the zag. It's normally found in the utility stitch menu on the machine. My machine manual calls it a 3 step elastic stitch. Often used to overcast a seam, or sew elastic on a garment. As well as darning. Here's a...

    J.L. Hudson's Canadian Cheese Soup

YOU FOUND THE SOUP RECIPE!! I grew up in the Detroit suburbs as well. I remember the trips downtown then to Northland, which was closer to where we lived. I can still taste that soup, even 40 plus years later. It was always a treat to have their soup, thank you so much for posting the recipe! I...

Mending a tear in new bedding

Does your machine have a 3-step zigzag? I've successfully repaired sheets by putting a patch of fabric on the wrong side and essentially "darning" with a 3- step zigzag and multiple rows of stitching. Stitch each new row on top of the preceding row by about an 1/8", beginning and ending on the...

    Input on Miele Dishwashers

The 6000 series models are on the Miele US website. The Lumen looks interesting, like a Dimension Plus with some Diamond features thrown in.

    Input on Miele Dishwashers

I have the LPerla II, I concur with all stated above. Best cleaning dishwasher I've ever used. The II added the auto open feature for the door after the cycle is complete. It really helps with drying. I can unload quite soon after the cycle completes and everything is dry. The Diamond has this...

    persil

I've been using the Persil pearls for just over two weeks now. About 15 loads later, I've found a new detergent. To me, it's on par with the German Universal powder, but not as good as the MegaPerls. I've had mostly good luck getting kitchen and household stains out. I'm using 45ml for usual...

Max volume of water in a modern FL?

Miele 3038... This is from page 30, "cleaning the drain pump and lint trap", ^ Turn the lint trap lid counterclockwise. Do not remove it. About 2 quarts (2 liters) of water will drain out of the hose. If the main drain hose is clogged, water will be retained in the machine (a maximum amount of...

    persil

"No one is "bashing" anything, merely trying to determine what sort of product Dial is marketing. Henkel can slap their "Persil" brand onto anything but that does not equal whatever is inside will behave in the same manner as German Persil." That was my point as well. US companies have a...

    persil

My thoughts exactly, Launderess.... If this is in fact the case, these formulas won't be very useful for me. I've become accustomed to using a powder with bleach for whites/ lights and an OBA free powder or liquid for darks. But, as you've stated above, this is not the typical way Americans do...

    persil

Thanks for the update, westtexman. while looking at the labels, I noticed that the pearls are "assembled in the USA from foreign ingredients", while the liquid States it's made in the US. I hope that means that Dial is importing Henkel's formula. I remain skeptical, but I'm optimistic. Jetcone...

    persil

It looks like Henkel has found a way to exploit the American Persil users. I'm guessing that this is just Purex with a Persil label for 10 bucks instead of buy 1 and get a case or however many free. Very disappointing. It also doesn't look like there are any colour formulas either. :-(

    MieleUSA und Persil Kaputt?

I was afraid of that. When I was on persilstore.com, I noticed in the description for universal megaperls that it stated "Order today as this difficult to find product is scarce in the US or Canada and it is uncertain whether we will be able to get this product again in the future." Though...

    Anyone who sews

The Babylock is hands down the best serger I've ever used. I started with the 4 thread Imagine and a few years later upgraded to the Evolution for its coverstitch features. I have never had any tensions issues with these machines. And are very easy to thread. When I got the Evolution, my first...

    Laundry Starch Recommendation

Mary Ellen's Best Press This is the best "starch", while not the cheapest, I've ever used. I'm a sewer/quilter so can use quite a bit of starch preparing fabric yardage for sewing. I like it because it adds the right amount of finish, if you need more just spray and iron again. It imparts an...

    Miele Wash Rinses

The Normal programme is how Miele gets its Energy Star designation. Therefore, it really only provides one rinse. For that reason, I use Sensor Wash most of the time.
