What makes you Happy for a Doller =1.00

Giving $1 to a homeless person will make you happier than anything you can buy with it. Maybe except for a Russell Stover's Mint Dream Bar: $0.79 + tax.

Why does EVERYTHING that's food have to be labelled "Homestyle"????

"I hate to think how many people would be unable to prepare enough food to survive in the event of a disaster" As my dad used to say, college teaches you everything you need to know, except how to cook food, make clothes and build shelter.

Why does EVERYTHING that's food have to be labelled "Homestyle"????

I don't think the adjective works as well as it once did. For younger Americans, "homestyle cooking" usually means microwaved plastic and pizza delivery.

    New bathroom cabinet

Davey, it wouldn't surprise me. Regardless of what it is (we had the same experience at HD recently with lawn mowers) they seem to carry more expensive and less capable/desirable models of just about everything. It's like a punishment ground for people who prefer buying things in person instead...

Is anybody getting their television "off the air"?

Bill, depending on terrain around your home you may get a lot of channels, a few or maybe none at all. E.g. in our part of the Sierra Nevada mountains a large rooftop antannae will net you two channels (three if you're lucky), with a tall mast the number skyrockets to five or six. Not worth the...

Carmine, thanks. Looks like the same was true for the LAPD.

    Speed Queen AWN412 vs AWN542

I'm very glad SQ is primarily a commercial producer, and doesn't advertise much to residential customers. I think it's the main reason the company has been spared the horrors of coming up with endless marketing gimmicks for their products, in fact imo it's why we still have top loading washers...

The latter and thanks for the correction. :)

    Flour Question...

Rick B, we recently adopted a similar stove with our house. First experience and we're trying to figure out what kind of griddle pan works best with it. To Allen, if you haven't already check at Trader Joes and organic food chains (Whole Foods etc). They usually have wide selections of flours.

    Consumer Reports: Your Two Cents

"What a perfect platform to expand upon articles that have been subject to space constraints in the printed magazine. Or an explanation of testing methods. Or, hows-about using it for inclusion of products that haven't made the cut for the abbreviated "top choice" lists-?" I agree completely...

Sandy, yea except for this part. Code 3. :) (To keep this thread on topic, this one dates from 1978. :)

    Need approximate photo date

So 1969 or later. I thought so. Thanks very much!!! I wonder why the '69 cop car would have yellow license plates? According to Wiki the state moved to black plates in 1964.

    Toastmaster "Rolltop" Toaster

Beautiful design on this one imo. Ours sits next to a black stove, and if the stove is any indication, a lot of dust accumulates in an open toaster. So I can think of at least one practical use for a rolltop. Hefty fire potential though, which imo is probably why the feature is rare.[this post...

Any AW member who knows cars, can you tell us the likely year this photo was taken? The yellow CA plates on the cop car were issued from 1958-1963, but the photo might date to somewhat later than 1963. Answers either here or via PM would be appreciated. Thanks!!

    Refrigerator: Organized or Chaos?

Ours is moreless identical to Eugene's. Except for the catsup. That much in our house would last at least 150 years.

    Consumer Reports: Your Two Cents

Eugene, I have the same memory as Washman. Around the mid-1990's the quality of CR took a major dive, they stopped doing truly objective (and therefore useful) testing and became little more than an industry-driven marketing tool for whatever new gimmicks are being pushed at the time of reviews...

Who thinks moderns of washers of today should bring back true wash and rinse tempatures?

Eugene, I would have used a different word than regulated, but imo CR lost their credibility years ago. Instead of objective testing, they start with their own subjective and presupposed lists of industry and/or government-driven "features" most important to THEM (e.g. for washer reviews...

Who thinks moderns of washers of today should bring back true wash and rinse tempatures?

"It's impossible to discuss this subject without it, at least here in the U.S." >> But not in "Deluxe" but in "Dirty Laundry" according to the rules. So the thread may or may not be misplaced, according to the rules and how the admins feel about it. It's a separate issue from the above...

Who thinks moderns of washers of today should bring back true wash and rinse tempatures?

"Politics in a thread again where it doesn't belong." It's impossible to discuss this subject without it, at least here in the U.S.

    New bathroom cabinet

Wow. Thanks for the info. Makes the difference in quality even harder to account for imo.
