Bendix automatic Home Washer MODEL D (511)

I wonder if it would be worthwhile getting the spare water valve solenoid coils from Mike? There could be a break down of the winding insulation on your old coils.

17 Surprising Things You Can Put In The Dishwasher .... Uhh maybe not.

I had heard about cooking salmon in the dishwasher but I was more interested in the list of what not to put in. I've never owned a dishwasher and as the years go by the list of reasons for not having one gets longer!

When bearings fail there is either a lot of up and down play in the drum relative to the tub or there is a notchy feel when you rotate the drum by hand. If ever you feel this notchy movement it is best to remove the belt and check again, as it can be due to a motor fault rather than the drum...

Yes, another lovely old Bendix! Looks to be well made and sturdy.

Bendix automatic Home Washer MODEL D (511)

That really is a wonderful machine, Lee. Thanks for posting all the detail photos. It's like a history lesson in washing machine technology. Does it have a heater or does the temperature control just switch between hot only and hot & cold mixed? I guess you are meant to rinse out the soap plug...

So, what do you choose not to do around the house? Why?

I'm currently in the process of renovating not one but 2 houses, so I am prepared to have a go at most things but in practice my state of health puts me off tackling big, heavy jobs. There is a stack of concrete slabs on the patio that I bought months ago to lay a new floor in the firewood...

It sounds like one of the Loctite products might serve to fill the small amount of play between spider arms and this retaining ring, possibly Loctite Bearing Mount 620.

Twin tubs were great in their day BUT

My first machine when I got my own place in 1981 was a Servis twintub. I suppose it was more work but I think my wash results were better than I have ever managed with an automatic. To me the agitation seemed more effective on my Servis than on my mothers Hoover machine. I did need to muck about...

    Servis MK303 Compact

I suggest you do the tub seal with the tub on its back and leave it like that for a few hours for the silicone to set. This will mean gravity is helping you rather than working against you.

    Wallpaper removal

The traditional method in UK was to use "Sugar Soap" but that is probably called something different in USA. The old fashioned Flash powder was also suitable for preparing walls and ceilings.

    Hotpoint First Editions

The last few of the small drum Hotpoints had a different make of motor instead of the usual GEC type motor. The frequent brush replacements needed on the GEC motor had been the main reliability issue on the Hotpoints so those final models before the WMA machines took over are my favourite...

    Let's Discuss... Rice Krispie Treats

For some reason, puffed rice does not appear to be available in eastern Europe. I did look at making my own but it sounds to be beyond the limitations of normal domestic cooking equipment. I did bring a carton back with me last time I went to UK by car. There are a few packets left so I might...

    Can Our British Friends Help?

I would have thought either a jewellery box or a faulty musical box could be bought quite cheaply and adapted.

Is the spider riveted onto the drum? If so it might be possible to drill out the rivets and replace them with stainless steel nuts and bolts.

Ariston Margherita timer stops by itself prematurely

The contacts in question on the pressure switch are what's called a changeover switch, the power is switched from the water solenoid to the heater circuit. It would be possible for the actual mechanical movement of the contacts to still be working so that the water still switched off but for...

    Hotpoint washing machine

Yes, please don't scrap it! As suggested, auction it on Ebay with a low starting price and state "buyer collects" so you don't get somebody asking you to deliver it to Aberdeen!

Ariston Margherita timer stops by itself prematurely

The other part of the heating circuit is the pressure switch. Normally when the wash water level is reached, the water solenoid turns off and the heater safety cut-out is over-ridden, to enable the heater circuit to go on (when also selected by the timer). Obviously it would be dangerous for the...

Ariston Margherita timer stops by itself prematurely

Usually when the timer goes through most stages but gets stuck at one or two places it is either a fault in the heating circuit (element or thermostats) or the filling (electric water solenoid). If, for example, the solenoid coil for the fabric conditioner rinse burns out it will get stuck on...

    My new zanussi fl812!

A lot of people in the trade swear by Debor glue for sealing things like the top hat thermostats and their rubber housings but I found normal silicone worked fine in cases where a sealant was required. This was usually on machines with alloy tub backplates where there was some corrosion round...
