Interesting find: a thermal cooking pot

You could try ice cream in it to see if it also keeps things cool. Might be good for picnics.

    Servis Continental

The van looks earlier than 1976 but I remember the Viva HA vans did look quite old fashioned by the time they were discontinued.

    Doing The Laundry 1940's England

I think such women were doing their own washing in the '40s but probably not in the '30s. One of the reasons that labour saving devices became popular was because middle class households could no longer find or afford "char" ladies. In the war such women had jobs in factories or on farms, so...

Picture of a European KitchenAid dishwasher

Worktop Height That is interesting about the higher worktops in Holland. When I moved to Hungary I was struck by how low the worktops were in my kitchen. I thought it was a low priority to renew the units but then I was forced to do it as an emergency job, as the old ones fell to pieces! I made...

    My new

Wow! I thought there must be a mistake when I saw the first post in this thread but they really were still making wringer washers in 1990!! I had assumed such machines faded out by the early '60s.

    Queen Video, what vacuum?

I was just wondering what sort of vacuum cleaner Freddy Mercury used?

    Culinary Disasters!

Yes, much like gnocchi, just a different shape. I've not seen frozen gnocchi, I've bought it chilled or as a powder you mix up. I still don't understand why a frozen product would have a different consistency to the chilled version. I've never heard of Spaetzle.

    Culinary Disasters!

Thanks for the suggestions, Al. I have got a tub of sour cream and I did wonder about mixing that with icing sugar to make a sweet topping for the pie. The mince pies had not boiled over but they had taken a long time to cook. My wood burning range is an Austrian Windhager one and it is nowhere...

    Culinary Disasters!

I seem to be having all sorts of cooking problems lately. This started with a bag of frozen burgonyanudli. This literally translates as potato noodles but they are actually a type of dumpling which you put in boiling water and remove when they float. You can then coat them with fried breadcrumbs...

    UK Kitchens

Some people who have the built in fridge with a cabinet door attached have an extra fridge in a utility room somewhere. I think there are various factors though that make a difference between USA and UK lifestyles. For one thing, a lot of UK fridges don't contain any beer. A lot of people either...

    Frozen pipes. ..

I have the same problem. There was no hot water supply to my kitchen when I bought my house so I ran a pipe in the loft from the bathroom to the kitchen. It is also a long run. I lagged the pipe but lagging only slows down the rate of heat transfer, it can never stop it. I also have problems...

    Homemaking at the Bramford

To my mind, opting to live in a huge building with loads of other families is "roughing it" so it is not what I would want, however spacious and luxurious it may be. It is probably just as well that the majority of the planets population don't think like me and are contented enough to live in an...

    Twin tub wanted

If the local paper has adverts for people who do house clearances you could contact them and ask them to keep an eye out for a twin tub. Some of them probably take them straight to to scrap metal merchants, assuming nobody wants twin tubs any more.

Jadeite, I have no idea if there is an interest.

I have some late '50s dishes in a similar shade of green but mine are Pyrex.

    Your first Automatic Washing machine

Mine was the Servis Starlight 6025, which was also the only new washing machine I've bought. When I left home in 1981 my mother was still using a Hoover twintub and she remained faithful to those for many years. She only got an automatic when one time she was in hospital for some time and my...

    Type of Heat?

When I bought it, my house here in Hungary did not have any heating equipment installed but there were 2 chimneys suitable for wood burning stoves. Each chimney is set in an internal wall, so there are inlet holes either side to allow for a stove in either room. The previous owners had a focal...

    Favourite detergent adverts

It's a shame the picture quality is so poor on some of those. They will be from old home video tapes but even so, I'm often amazed at the poor pictures some people tolerate on their TVs.

Selling my Hoover A3110 Electronic 1100

Might be worth trying EMW to get your timer repaired but you would have the problem of all those wires to take off and put back. Perhaps another member can help in some way? http://https//emwelec.co.uk/index.php?l=product_list&c=4
