    "He's the Bold One"

Bold--the detergent I used for years when I was in charge of laundry. Not my choice, however--my mother swore by it. To quote another old Bold ad, "she likes to choose them. But I'm the one who has to use them!" Never saw a box of Tide in my family. Most other brands--but never Tide.

    The First Remote Controlled Television?

Remote History Several years ago, I wrote about the remote control's history. You might get a kick out of it. (There is an update to the story: Robert Adler, the Zenith physicist who came up with the ultrasonic Space Command, died in February 2007.) http://www.teletronic.co.uk/clicker.htm

    Windows 7

No Lucky Seven For Me Right Now I've learned my lesson: Wait until the bugs are out before shifting to the next Windows upgrade. By the time I purchase a new computer, Windows 7 should be relatively trouble free. So for now, I'll hang on to Windows XP. (Or maybe switch to Mac. We'll see.)

    The Most Important Automobile Question

Automatic, Please I've tried to use a manual shift, but I'm not good at it. So every one of my cars has been an automatic. I make no apologies for shiftless driving, especially in the city and on the freeway. Of the various cars with automatics I have owned, the smoothest has been the one on my...

    August 25, 2009!

Good News For thirtysomething Fans Apparently, it was the cost of the music rights for the original episodes that stalled release of a thirtysomething DVD collection. That problem has been solved, I understand, paving the way for Season One and others to follow. It was mocked in its original...

    *RIP* Pontiac Motors

Pontiac's Finest Hour? This commercial from 1969 was probably the high point of Pontiac's "Wide Track" era, IMHO--with some of the most attractive cars coming out of Detroit. (I'd grab that Grand Prix and Bonneville hardtop--or maybe the Executive wagon. Wow! Definitely Uncle Bill/"Family...

    laundry detergent

I Remember The King White King made a fine line of laundry products at reasonable prices. I loved White King D (detergent); it had a nice odor and cleaned clothes well. I still see the White King water softener, but the other products must have been lost in merger and acqusition land. Anyone...

what american laundry detergent is the best?

I've Tried Them All, And... I still like Ariel (the Mexican version, when they have them available at the 99 Cent Only Store); Costco's Kirkland Signature brand and Tide with Bleach. But the brand that does the best overall job for me is--believe it or not--Sun. I like the liquid version (with...

    Satellite Radio SIRIUS/XM

I've Kept It For A Few More Months I had decided to cancel Sirius/XM in my car and called customer service. They offered me five months for $25 (a limited time offer). I said yes. It's nice to have Strobe and OutQ--along with the decade music channels. Still on the fence on whether to renew...

    Movie "Milk"

One of the better moviedocs I've seen in recent years. Sean Penn's portrayal of Harvey Milk was indeed Oscar-worthy, although I thought the movie really came to life after the first 30 minutes or so. Still worthwhile viewing--and a great history lesson for today's LGBT generation.

    GOProud Kick Off

Good Luck To GOProud Although I'm an unwavering Democrat, I support gay Republicans in their effort to show the national party the light. The cause of gay rights will only be helped if both major parties have strong, clear GLBT activism in their ranks. Agreed, both Log Cabin and GOProud have an...

Request for all the AW.org members

My Best For Amanda Your pride for Amanda is justified; I'm also praying for her safe return and expressing my admiration for her and her fellow soldiers in these difficult times. May they all come home safely, mission accomplished at last.

I am so racked with grief--E.R's final episode

The End Of NBC's Legacy Thursday's departure of "ER" signals the end of a long tradition of quality drama on NBC every Thursday night at 10:00 PM--one that began in 1981 with "Hill Street Blues"; then moved to "L.A. Law" in 1987, and concluded with "ER's" run from 1994 to the present. It was a...

    Compact Fluorescent Failures

CFL's Have Done Well For Me In 2002, I installed CFL bulbs in my bedroom and living room lamps. (I forgot the brand name, but I purchased them at Homo Depot.) They are still working well today. So well, I bought another set of CFL's (Lights of America) for spares--one is now in my ceiling fan...

    Ad for 1960s Bold Detergent

My Favorite Bold Ad Is... A 1968 commercial featuring "Laugh-In's" Jo Anne Worley, who sings how much she loves red--and Bold. The ad is about three minutes into this YouTube clip. A classic! (There's also a great Glad Bag ad at the end--featuring our favorite superhero, the Man From Glad!

    I Love It!

Good Taste Laundress! Two thumbs up for Leslie Jordan here! Not only "Boston Legal" and "Will & Grace," but I highly recommend checking out "Sordid Lives: The Series" on Logo. His acting skills shine as Brother Boy. (I don't know if Logo has renewed SL for a second season, but I'm sure there...

    Heres My westys

Betty Loved Them Too I bet Betty Furness looked lovely while standing next to these Westy food keepers on "Studio One" and other shows. No wonder she was more popular than Adali and Ike at the '52 conventions (which Westinghouse sponsored on CBS). I mean, really. Who would you rather have as a...

What is the name of this dryer?

Great Dryer My mother bought one (a gas model) in 1971 or '72 to replace our overheating Kenmore "frog-eye". Since the dryer was in the garage (and the washer was in the house), it didn't matter if the dryer didn't match. It was a very good dryer, holding large loads and drying them without...
