    Pie Crust problems!!

In my extended family on my father's side "dessert" almost always meant pie.  At holiday dinners three different kinds of pie were always the minimum; apple (always Haralson apples!) pumpkin, green tomato mince, plus rhubarb, raspberry or any other kind of fruit stocked from that year's harvest...

It's Official - Convection Oven Beats Microwave

A friend of mine has a relatively new Whirlpool wall oven with the hidden bottom element.  It heats up quickly and works beautifully, even cooking on two racks simultaneously.     My 1952 Gibson range has concealed bottom elements and I'm very happy with how the ovens perform.  The thermostat...

    My New Stove

What's better than green with envy? Turquoise!  That range is a triumph of 60's design and absolutely gorgeous!  The hooks on the doors support the oven liner when it's pulled out for cleaning.   The meat tender works with a probe that's inserted in your roast to measure the internal...

    S.O.S Dishwasher Detergent?

I remember Palmolive and Calgonite too, but not Dial.  Electrasol ended or became Finish when Ecolab sold off that part of the business I think.  It's a shame because Electrasol worked better than anything else at the time or ever since.

    New Sears Outlet Store

I'm not absolutely certain but I don't think there are any Sears outlet stores here anymore unless they're in far corners of the metro area where I never go.  I haven't seen one in many years at least.  We have lots of Appliancemarts around town though and they carry a wide range at fairly...

    Bounce Dryer Bar

The dryer that came with my last house had one of those packets or bars in it.  I dislike artificial scents.  I prefer my clothes to smell like nothing at all.....that's what clean smells like to me.  Anyway, I didn't even notice the thing in the dryer until after taking out the first load of...

    S.O.S Dishwasher Detergent?

I remember SOS dishwasher detergent.  All was another brand at the time which also went off the market.

Introducing the Picture Window Lady Kenmore Roto-Rack!!!!!!!

I remember both the front-only and 360 degree-view demo dishwashers but can't remember if only one or both were roto-racks.  Or for that matter, if one I'm remembering wasn't Montgomery Ward.  I do remember being drawn to those demo units like a magnet and standing there mesmerised until Mom or...

It's Official - Convection Oven Beats Microwave

A good rule of thumb when cooking meats by convection (and many other things as well) is to reduce the temperature by 25-50 degrees from what is called for when using a conventional oven or, start the cooking process at a high temp of 425-450 for about 10-15 minutes until the meat is browned and...

It's Official - Convection Oven Beats Microwave

Launderess, NOW you're cooking Perhaps I'm a purist but I can't imagine anything being remotely palatable after cooking it in a microwave oven.  I use mine for defrosting frozen items and for warming leftovers but that's about it.   I could very easily go without using a microwave oven at all...

How often do you take a shower/bath? How long? Water consumption?

I will on rare occasions skip a day and other days either because of getting sweaty or dirty when working on projects I'll take two but I generally take one brief hot shower daily.  And then there are days in the winter when after getting very cold I might take a shower just to get warm. ...

Introducing the Picture Window Lady Kenmore Roto-Rack!!!!!!!

$#@&%*$ wonderful!!! Robert, you've done it again!  I can't wait to see it!  I suppose I'll have to wait until the convention in September but dang, you did an awesome job.  Congratulations on another amazing bit of washer wizardry.

My new stove - Detriot Jewel

My stove is laid out a little differently inside but here is a picture of one of the burner valves inside my stove.  I think on a Detroit all the valves are directly behind the knobs on the front of the range.

My new stove - Detriot Jewel

valve grease Gary, those old style gas valves can get gunked up or dried up to the point where they don't work or potentially can leak gas.  Do any of the knobs feel stiff when you turn on a burner?   They should turn really easily with almost no resistance.   There's an outfit in California...

Tossed my pillows in the Duet today...

There are several places around town here that will clean and re-tick pillows.  In my old neighborhood there were two places within two blocks of the house.

How many here still like/drink Kool-Aid?

You'll think I was deprived in my childhood Mom treated sugar as a "controlled substance" in our household.   She kept the cookie jar well-stocked and there was always dessert at the end of supper each night but things like pie always veered towards tart over sweet.   She occasionally made Kool...

Tossed my pillows in the Duet today...

I love clean pillows, but trying to wash them in a top-loader was always an exercise in futility.  They simply refused to stay submergered, sometimes even lifting the lid on the washer, and trying to squeeze the air out of them never helped for more than a few seconds.  And, reaching into a tub...

It's A Pickle Party - Making Bread & Butter Pickles

Bread and butter pickles....I can eat them by the quart!  I use my aunt's recipes for B&B, dill, beet and watermellon pickles.  That's on my canning to-do list, along with tomatoes and some green tomato mince for bars and holiday pies.  First on the list though are two crates of Colorado peaches...

    Heres one for ya- Incinerator

Basement incinerators were quite common here until the 50's.  I read in an old magazine once about how the "well outfitted, modern home" had a garbage chute in the kitchen so that after wrapping kitchen scraps or even the contents of the cloth vacuum cleaner bag in newspaper and neatly tied with...
