Wall Paper

At first glance it looks as if the range has been wall papered.  What a perfect finish.  I was knocked back to see the stainless surface under the burners.  It looks like a dream to clean.

Looks like you're all set to cook up a storm even if the electricity goes out!  Those ranges from the 1930's are so stylish.  Congrats.

Your Detroit range is a jewel!

Ranges from that era have always been a favorite of mine for their spectacular porcelain finishes.  They came in a dizzying variety of colors and designs.  They're also built like the proverbial "tank" and with just a little care like greasing the valves they seem to last forever.  Do you do much baking?  I bet the oven produces perfect results.  Most of these old ones do.  Back in the late 40's my mother had a Detroit Jewel similar to yours which she says was the best oven she ever used.   She lived above a motel diner and baked all the bread and pies served there!  I have a 1931 Magic Chef which has the best oven I've ever used for baking bread.  There is a lot of heavy steel in these old ranges which gives a wonderfully even, radiant heat, and they hold the heat a long time after shutting off the gas!

valve grease

Gary, those old style gas valves can get gunked up or dried up to the point where they don't work or potentially can leak gas.  Do any of the knobs feel stiff when you turn on a burner?   They should turn really easily with almost no resistance.   There's an outfit in California that sells lubricant for vintage valves and can walk you through the process if you send them good pictures of your stove's "guts."  They also can do things like rebuild oven thermostats.  I can find the phone number for you if you want.  Speaking of the oven, do you still light yours each time or does it have a pilot light with a safety shutoff?  My Magic Chef was retrofitted with one.

My stove is laid out a little differently inside but here is a picture of one of the burner valves inside my stove.  I think on a Detroit all the valves are directly behind the knobs on the front of the range.

HI Neil

Thanks for the info. Some of the valves do feel stiff when I move them. The burners do have a pilot light but I always light them with a match. The thermostat is 100 degress off.
The phone number and any information that you could share with me will be greatly appreciated.
I turn the gas off at the supply valve everytime I am finished using it. Thanks again. Gary

What a great looking stove!
The cooking burners are awesome looking! Do you have any pictures of them lit?
I wonder what the BTU's are per burner.
Looks like a great cooker!
