    Stars and their Appliances

Another Sears ad Why does Anne Baxter, who could afford any washer she wanted, choose a Kenmore from Sears? Because she stole it from Bette Davis.

    Stars and their Appliances

Jayne could've gotten her LK custom colored. She took the name of her home--the Pink Palace--VERY seriously.

    Stars and their Appliances

Jayne Mansfield had a pink 1965 Lady Kenmore set--according to a former Sears repairman who attempted to sell a wad of Jayne's pink dryer lint on eBay.

Sears Cda 1981; TOL Kenmore Dishwasher

I've never seen a timer like that on a dishwasher. Did Sears sell anything like this in the U.S.?

    KELVINATIN!

Lovely Kelvinator! That has to be one of the most fun designs of all time.

What is your SO's most endearing trait?

No significant other, but... Baby Lizzy (the Shelley Winters Persian) sleeps rolled up like a big cinnamon bun, displaying surprising flexibility for a creature of her age and weight.

    Estate Sales Nightmares!

I've never been to a typical estate sale, but I did attend two "public sales," or estate auctions. I'm never going to another one. Watching a roomful of 40- and 50-year-olds fighting like bratty children over (often literal) junk kind of erodes one's faith in humanity. Not to mention the...

    Getting tortured in school.

High school still gives me nightmares sometimes. It was a small school, in a horrible little community where everybody knew everybody's business. I got tortured for everything, from the fact that my mom drove an old car ('79 LTD) to the fact that I had an orthopedic problem and couldn't walk...

Guess who's coming to dinner revealed: Toggleswitch and JimmyB in Tucson!

Sure looks like fun. I love the kitty guarding the KitchenAid.

Best wishes for a thorough recovery. That's certainly a horrible thing to have to go through. Is he diabetic?

    Thrift store find!

Is the Featherweight really "featherweight"? A few months ago I almost wrecked my back carrying a Montgomery Ward portable.

    Latest Midcentury Acquisitions

Ball Chair The Eero Aarnio Ball Chair is a huge fiberglass globe on a pedestal. The inside is thickly padded, and you sit mostly enclosed. They were considered the epitome of 60s modern design, and they go for four figures now.

    Sunbeam Showcase

I had a friend whose office had no coffee maker, so I bought her a beautiful vintage Sunbeam percolator, similar to but not exactly like the one on the far right of the "Showcase." It was chrome, with the twist-to-lock lid, and I might've kept it for myself if I drank coffee. Unfortunately, the...

OK Kitchen Rangers, 1957 Custom Imperial...

"especially if you painted it white." It's sunshine yellow, ya damn fool! Anybody can have WHITE! Neely needs a doll now...

    Latest Midcentury Acquisitions

That is the coolest thing. Is the Cone Chair a sought-after collectors item, like the Ball Chair?

Observation about "What Do You Miss?"

Does anyone here remember Hess's department store? Their big flagship was in Allentown, PA. When I was a kid there was a Hess's in our local mall (which opened in 1980). I remember it as a huge, barnlike department store, with a '50s electric range used as a cookware display. We never actually...

    Hamilton Dryer on e-Bay

Did the later Hamiltons (like the '60s models with the big half-moon window) have the same drying principles as the early models? The dryers turn up occasionally, but the washers seem very rare. Has anyone here ever used a Hamilton washer?

What is your spouse's most annoying habit?

That's what they all say when they can't have it off Bubble, "AbFab."

    Washing Machines In The Movies

And Marge Simpson replaced her "walking" washer and dryer with a gold Philco-style set (washer usually shown with side-opening lid, dryer usually shown with porthole door). Considering their car was made in Guatemala, there's no telling where their appliances come from.

New Sweeper or Stick Broom Recommendations?

Regina Electrikbrooms are great on bare floors. My late '60s model is a joy.
