What Do We Think Of Asko

@Laundress: I'm probably short for this world on this Betty Crocker wannabe site, but I have enjoyed talking to you. I've P.O.'d some Nancys on the Super board, and they have a hard-on for me for criticizing their apple pie recipes and challenging them to a non-traditional cookoff. BFD. Our...

Need a good traditional apple pie recipe

When was the last time someone on this board actually dispensed some advice about how to fix a washing machine? I'll trade butthurt over a pie recipe for someone that knows how to fix a belt-drive Whirlpool. Any takers?

    Wednesday Is Prince Spaghetti Day

Thanks for the historical perspective. We were subjected to those awful "creamettes" noodles when I was growing up. Wherever they came from... I need to hop over to to the Super forum where the Nancys are trying to get me banned for criticizing someone's apple pie recipe. Be right back - or...

Maytag MTW5600 tub holes rusting, what to do?

@warrenkeller: You don't need to replace the "tub ring". But you do need to be careful. The snap clips can be removed successfully - and not replaced. But if you get all badass, it won't turn out well.

Maytag MTW5600 tub holes rusting, what to do?

@DirectDriveDave: Maybe the early 1960s ones do. Contemporary Whirlpool machines (ones made after about 1984 that is) don't neutral drain. The basket starts to turn, the pump drains out the tub. Then the spin cycle does its thing. Spin, spray rinses, spin...

Camera Collectors: evaluation on this Kodak Brownie etc

I think this site might not give you a good valuation. It's quaint now, but my grandfather took a gazillion family pictures with a German Exacta Camera. And a huge flash gun that he had to plug into the wall socket. It had Carl Zeiss optics, but it was completely manual. We have a lot of...

Need a good traditional apple pie recipe

@mixfinder: Grow a sack. I don't think raisins and nuts have any business in an apple pie - and I'll stand by that statement. You're welcome to disagree. If you want to have a a bake-off, let's do it. I'll host. We're just east of Exit 94 off Interstate 35 in Iowa. Bring your A-game and...

    Wednesday Is Prince Spaghetti Day

It's a strange world. PastaBarilla has a huge plant near us. No one grows wheat in Iowa. The Barilla people positioned their plant right off Interstate 35. It's a technological wonder - they can run their giganto plant with something like 60 people and turn out many tons of noodles a day...

Maytag MTW5600 tub holes rusting, what to do?

Wow, getting Maytag(Whirlpool)to fix that machine is awesome! You must be living well. Congrats.

    Another Miele Ordered.....

Congrats on your new dryer. Just as a point of reference, how long does it take to dry a full load, and what do you think that load weighs initially?

    KITCHENAID

Either Maytag "Dependable Care" or KitchenAid machines are worth seeking out if you can find them used in decent condition. So are Whirlpool direct-drive machines that the KitchenAid machines are based on. Maytag "Performa" machines I would probably pass on. We have a Maytag set that is...

    Mexican EASY washers

That's a complex issue, I think. Whirlpool moved a bunch of their washer production to Mexico 6 or 7 years ago. Then Electrolux and LG (or maybe it was Samsung, or both) did the same thing. In the meantime, Whirlpool has re-located its washing machine production that is destined for the U.S...

Need a good traditional apple pie recipe

Less is more. Raisins and nuts have no business in a apple pie. Nor does mace. Try this 90 year-old recipe: 7 cups sliced apples. [Jonathans are best. A 3 lb. bag equals 7 C.] 2/3 C. Sugar 1-1/3 T. Flour [not cornstarch or tapioca.] 2 t. lemon juice 1/2 t. Cinnamon 1/4 t. Nutmeg 1/8 t...

Jenn Air Convection Oven Rattle (vintage)

"Was it difficult to correct?" Not really. Just replace it. Whirlpool took over Jenn-Air when they bought Maytag. Whirlpool has no intention of supporting Jenn-Air. WP has the Kitchen Aid brand for their premium stuff. They have no need for Jenn-Air to exist.

    Another automatic roaster question

Why in the world would anyone want to buy a tub-o-crap roaster oven? You can cook your turkey or whatever in your real oven, take it out, cover it with foil, cook your side dishes and be golden.

    Osterizer blender owners

I don't think I've abused any of my small appliances, either. It's not reasonable for you to expect a 40 year old blender to do anything at all. Except to look good on the countertop. Osterizers are the 1965 Ford Falcon compared to the 2012 Ford Focus Cuisinart. I go camping with a Bic...

    And so it Begins

Thawing a solidly frozen turkey in a cooler? Sure, it's the best you can do if you can't get a fresh one. Brining a turkey? No way. What does brining accomplish? It proves that osmotic pressure works, but that's it. The concept of osmotic pressure is important for people undergoing kidney...

    My Heater Fetish

Wow, I hope the pictures in this thread "are for display only." Space heaters sitting on carpet? Even though they supposedly have anti-tip-over switches they are dangerous. More people die in Iowa fires from space heaters than from candles or people passing out on the sofa with a lit...

    Electric citrus juicing

If you have a Kitchen Aid mixer, that's the way to go, IMO. Just add the juicer attachment and go on. Kitchen Aid mixers do need occasional maintenance though - changing the gearcase grease once every 5 years or so is worth the effort. Ours is 25 years old and still going strong.

There are some steel homes dating back to the 1930s around here that came from Sears. Sears used to be what Amazon is now...
