I had a friend over for dinner this evening, and the hot vegetable was shredded carrots in clementine butter. However, I think juicing all those clementines killed my Krups citrus juicer, one I have had since the 1980s. For one glass, or "half a lemon's worth," I just juice manually.

However, there are a few times a year when I juice a great amount of citrus.

Here are the options 1) See if the regional small appliance repair store would try to take it on. (I'm wondering if it could be fixed at all. It hums when I press down on the reamer, but that's it. Plastic gears perhaps?)

2) Get the citrus attachment for the KitchenAid mixer

3) Get a new juicer, such as the Cuisinart citrus juicer.

I have never, ever seen an electric citrus juicer at yard sales, or places like Goodwill or Salvation Army or independent resale stores.

Oh, and generally speaking, I try to avoid juice from the refrigerated section or frozen concentrate. Not out of any health concerns, just that I think freshly pressed citrus juices taste better.

The KA attachment would be the cheapest way to go.  My only complaint about them is that you have to stop the process and dump out the strainer every few lemons.  Some people might also have an issue with using sideways pressure instead of downward.

I've seen vintage electric juicers in thrift stores but haven't given them much thought.  Between my KA attachment and my Champion for everything other than citrus, I don't really need another juicer.

Also, you know the rules:  Even if you had seen juicers in thrift stores previously, now that you need one you could hit every thrift store within a 20 mile radius and not find a single one.

Juicing clementines killed the Krups juicer?? Wow!! Doesn't speak well for the Krups! I think you could just about juice clementines with Q-tips, they're so soft!!

You might want to check out a vintage Sunkist or similar machine, like the one below....

Good luck,
Chuck

Hey!

Before anyone maligns my comatose Krups........I have used it for years (I remember buying it around 1985!) to juice CRATES of oranges, or limes......

I'm still open to suggestions. However, I have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel, and sometimes it flares, so a non-electric juicer does not appeal. (pun fully intended!)

I like the look of the Breville citrus juicer, but not the (United States) price.

Shipping charges are pretty steep on that Sunkist, and the winning bid will likely be higher than $9.99.  No doubt it's a heavy juicer with components that require careful packing, but there's a point where I no longer consider an item worth bidding on when shipping costs are factored in.

I actually own the Breville Citrus juicer.

Not only is it extremely easy to use, but it's also very easy to clean. Everything can go in the dishwasher because it's all made from stainless steel. (Except for the top cup, which is dishwasher safe plastic.)

The motor on this thing seems to be nearly indestructible..

Sure, it costs an arm and a leg, but it is worth every penny. I feel like I could demolish an entire fruit stand with one of these...

Yes that Breville is nice but way to pricey. It's not like a lot of pressure is needed on a regular electric reamer. People don't seem to call them reamers anymore but that's what they are.

Since you have a KA mixer, I suppose the KA citrus juicing attachment would be the way to go. Having said that, I own an electric Philips citrus juicer that works like a charm. it's elegantly styled, to boot! I've had it for...probably close to 10 years. And I agree; freshly-squeezed juice is the way to go. No cooked taste from processing and pasteurization.

I too juice a lot of oranges

Since most winters are so mild here in Louisiana, there are many orange groves and there is a popular local variety called "Louisiana Sweets" it much like the popular Valencia orange. I have a blood orange tree in my back yard that makes great juice too! I like using the Mixmaster juicer attachment with the "jogging" strainer rather than my KitchenAid citrus juicer. The strainer is a "pita" for me.

In Agreement

For as much as I enjoy the gadgetry of appliances, its been my experience that multi use uniyss like Mixmaster, Kitchenaid, Kenwood, Kirby etc are good at their original purpose and there is often a compromise for making one appliance do many things. I have had the best luck with the small white juicer Ina Garten uses made by Braun. I have a Cuisinart juicer and it is too tall and can slip to the side when juicing like an SUV rollover in a CR test. The Cuisinart is piercingly loud, makes a griding noise under load and the plastic reamer rubs on the juicer housing. If you overload the Cuisinart it reverses to escape the pressure, so often it sounds like a quick shot rifle ratcheting between forward and backward. The little, quiet, unassuming Braun is like the Little Engine That Could.

I have a Cuisinart juicer myself... Works well, though in the ranks of seldom-used single-used appliances I rarely do anything with, when I can get bottled juice (w/o the mess & clean-up) instead...!

Then again, I recently made a very good juice from a pomegranate!

The Best for Less

America's Test Kitchen has released a buying guide for the best of the best in each categary of kitchen appliances, tools and gadgets. They believe the Black and Decker Citrus Mate Plus at $19.99 is the best of it's class.[this post was last edited: 11/27/2012-00:16]

If you have a Kitchen Aid mixer, that's the way to go, IMO. Just add the juicer attachment and go on.

Kitchen Aid mixers do need occasional maintenance though - changing the gearcase grease once every 5 years or so is worth the effort. Ours is 25 years old and still going strong.
