Recently, my father was in the process of selling his family’s homestead, and we found a 1930s Bendix automatic washer while cleaning out the house. We know this is one of the original Bendix’s washers as my grandmother purchased this machine soon after it was manufactured back in the 1930s (the photo attached shows the identifcation tag found on the back of the machine).

We are not equipped to refurbish the machine ourselves but would like to sell it to someone that appreciates this machine's history and is interested in the challenge of renovating it. The machine is currently located in Durham, NC. Is there anyone reading this message that might be able to assist us? If you are interested in purchasing or know someone that might be interested in purchasing this antique, please let me know.

We also have a 1930s Universal electric stove from this estate we would like to sell.

Thank you for any help you may provide me.

More photos to come. Will take a little time as we have to shoot the photos and get them loaded onto this website. Thanks for your response.

I am attaching additional photos of the Bendix washer to this thread.

Thank you for any input you may provide.

I will add more photos of the Universal stove when I get them.

I think this is the first Bendix I have seen in the flesh (or steel) with the downward opening door. This would have the timer with the original rinse sequence which consisted of two spray rinses and one deep rinse, I think.

more pics more lol!

Nice pics of your bendix!

Could you post more closeup pics of the front knobs and the script?

And also of the soap dispenser door with it open to see inside?

The zoom limits on my cell are maxxed out!!

Thx

Am happy to post those photos as soon as I can get them. Could you clarify what you mean by a close-up of the script? Are you referring to the words "Bendix Home Laundry" between the dials on the front of the machine towards the top?

Here is a photo of what I believe to be the script you are referring to. It is located on the front of the machine between the two dials. Hope this helps you.

Additional photos of the dials on the front of the machine as well as photos of the soap dispenser with lid open are attached in the following posts as previously requested.

AH! just what the doctor ordered

Nice detailed pics.
Thanks

So now that the lint screen door is open, with an inner colour of white or cream,
Can we assume the uniform brown colour is from decades of dust settling and not paint failure or advanced rust?

Looks like a coating of rust on the cabinet to me, but not of a terribly corrosive variety and it has a sort of attractive hue to it.  The top is porcelain so it didn't rust.

may be able to help someone

If someone is interested in the Bendix but can't get to Durham quickly, I live in Durham and have a large basement. Contact me if you need me to pick it up for you and store it until you can get here.

I would think about it for myself, but it is more work than I want to tackle - especially since I have a ton of dishwashers that I am working on right now.

it looks like r..

red dirt to me, as i look closer at the last set of pics on a hi res screen at the newish scratches on the cabinet front and sides, the white is poking through.

i had lightly used a scotchbrite fiber pad on my Bendix dryer cabinet on the most 'browned' paint sections and with a slight dusting of the paint, the white started to show through, plus it had some baked-on aged dirt.
Whatever brand of paint Bendix was using at that time seems to 'age' to a brown patina.

the surface rust seems to be on the door surround, where i assume the chrome was on.

some TLC needed...

A question about what the drum is made of came up in this thread. We checked. The drum does appear to be galvanized.

Thanks for all the input into this conversation. This week, my father is clearing out the storage unit containing this Bendix washer and the Universal stove (see thread under "Super"). Please let me know if any one of you is interested in taking on either or both of these two renovations and can make it to Durham this week to pick up the items. You may email me at [email protected]. Again, thank you for your time.
