These ranges had ovens that were designed to cook with the gas turned off. Just like Chambers gas stoves. Reading the Maytag cookbook you would think you bought the finest gas range ever made! Who made these stoves for Maytag? Originally there were about 8 models and by 1953 there only 2. Maytag discontinued these models around 1955. Excellent recipes in that cookbook I still make today like porcupine meatballs, skillet spaghetti, beef stew, white cake, brownies, and others.

I looked at one just like this last summer. The seller wanted $150 which was still a great deal considering how well made these stoves are. To use either propane or natural gas, you adjust each burner separately rather than changing orifices. I ended up not buying it because it wouldn't fit down our basement stairs.
A friend's family had this range and his mother loved her Dutch Oven. The range design was discontinued because some government agency thought it dangerous to reach across flaming burners to adjust them; never mind keeping the controls out of the reach of children. Another family in our neighborhood has the model with the airplane-type controls, the rods with a red knob on the end were moved up toward the back of the range for higher heat and to the front for the off position. Thinking of how people bend down to look at the flame of a burner when adjusting the heat, this burner valve arrangement would seem inconvenient. Maybe those contortions were what made the burner valve arrangement dangerous?
I recently purchased and spent the better part of a week cleaning the Maytag dutch oven. I love it, now I need to convert it to LP. Polkanut, you mentioned that you can adjust each burner. Can you give me any other information? Any help would be fantastic!!

Beautiful... Makes me wish I had gas service. Is it just the angle of the pic, or are those burners huge? They look larger than usual.
