1955 motel stay in El Paso, had those in the rooms.  Larger cousin seen in restaurants of the era.  I'm unclear where the hot air went, not paying all that much attention to airconditioners back then seeing as how we wouldn't own one until 1957.

The large restaurant versions had either a wood or galvanized water tower on a roof or outside where the heat exchange took place. My Dad's restaurant had a Carrier in the bar which had a galvanized water exchange and the Dining room was a GE Console with a Marley Wooden Water Tower on the Roof. That one took a day or so to swell.

These were the large stand up console type. They generally housed the compressor inside the console. In the winter they had the water and pumps drained.

Those units produced Ice Cold Air.

My Aunt Bess and Uncle Al had one of these in their apartment in Chicago, as my mom remembered. No problem for her to bake in the oven instead of in the apartment in summer. There was a vent through the wall for the hot air.

The great big huge metallic blue/green Carrier I remember from a restaurant where we used to eat in Jacksonville, FL in the 50s. Since the compressor was right there in the dining room, it was loud as hell, but by god, it was cold and dry. Far more fascinating were all of the large mounted fish on the walls, especially the Sailfish and Marlin.
