After years of hunting I finally found a early Tappan microwave. This one was built in January 1960. It's a water cooled unit , which is interesting. Supposedly it worked when it was removed, but this was told to me by the seller had it listed as a wall oven. Unfortunately, the contractors that removed it threw away the recipe drawer and broke the handle.

I highly doubt anyone has the drawer, so I figured I'll try to make a cover for the hole. However I figured it wouldn't hurt to see if someone has a drawer lying around.

Also, would anyone happen to have a parts Tappan wall oven from about the same year that I could get a handle off of? It's made of pot metal, so it would be a challenging repair.

Thanks everyone.[this post was last edited: 6/26/2023-21:17]

1960 built-in Tappan microwave

Hi, Will, don’t try to power up that oven without making sure there’s an antifreeze solution in the cooling system and that the pump and everything is turning and pumping, etc. before powering it up.

The handle should be a relatively easy fix. It would be neat if it actually worked, I have yet to get one of these early microwaves to work.

Let everybody know how it goes.

Sure thing. I'm hoping to find a better handle. J.B weld may work for now, I guess. I'm not a big fan of pot metal. This will be a back burner project as I've got a few things ahead of it.

I have a handle!!

Last year I scored two Tappan handles just like that in an eBay auction. I used one of them on a cabinet, but the other one you are welcome to have if you'd like it.

The only difference is that the bakelite inlay on yours is white, whereas mine is black.

Also, I live in Portsmouth, VA, so this is rather fortuitous!!
