1961 GE High-Speed Dryer

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

That is sort of a special drop in model some dealers got. A neighbor had that dryer and the matching washer which had the flat keys for speed, wash temp, rinse temp and water level. Their dealer also sold them the special red almost TOL 30" range with chrome-lined inner door, Sensi-Temp and wide, non-lighted piano key pushbutton switches, even for the oven. There is not much difference between the drying temperatures at the Medium and Low settings according to John's reading of the GE literature. What a shame moisture got to the control panel.

Oh, I'm so on this!!!!!

Lawrence, thank you for posting this. You know, with all the FRIGGGIN'  saved watch lists I have on eBay when dream-machine stuff like this comes up, I NEVER get a wind of it! Boy are they gonna get an earful from me!!!!

Ken,
You were the first person to come to mind when I found this. I remembered that you have a 1961 FF and just couldn't imagine a more perfect companion to this dryer!

I've never seen the foot pedal arrangement that's on this one. Very similar to the full-width foot pedal on Ralph's 1957 Combination.

This style of foot pedal was only used on their 1961 dryers. Now that I have one that I can examine up close I  understand why. It's more ergonomically designed than many others, because the user can hit it with their foot very easily at many locations on the wide bar. It is, however, attached to the dryer solidly at three points; there are no mechanical connections. It depends on the flexibility of the metal itself to yank the wire that operates the magnetic latch on the door. I expect there were a lot of early failures of this style of pedal because of metal fatigue and plain-old bending. It was replaced by the postage-stamp sized conventional pedal that are seen on TOL GE dryers from 1962 to 1970. They worked, but even in our house, we took to hooking our fingers around the edge of the door to open it; it was just easier.

A dream machine acquired; thanks for asking!

Yup!

I have two vintage GE dryers coming my way, one pink (the DA-820P Alex posted an ad of, above), one blue. Happy camper!

The seller tells me he has an old (?) GE dishwasher in the same place that I'm going to get the dryer...this will be interesting.
