1972 Hotpoint dishwasher in San Diego, never used!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Fascinating dishwasher!!! We had something very very similar in our new-build house in 1967. It was coppertone, the door was a tad different, but the latch and upper handle were the same. Also a one-knob wonder.

My folks hated it. Finally in about 1974/1975, the wiring caught on fire. I vividly remember my mother shouting while on a long-distance call - "THE DISHWASHER IS ON FIRE!" My dad comes running and says "Let it go" and suddenly there was a white flash, the lights in the kitchen went dark due to a blown breaker, and that was that.

We replaced it with a KDS-17 or 17A. What an improvement, from a BOL piece of sheet to about the best money could buy!

I have not seen a machine like ours since - but I sure do remember the big wheels on the lower rack, and the center tower with the blue cone in it.

Hotpoints didn't change much over the years. My aunt in Kansas City had one almost exactly like this in their new house built in 1973. Her graphics were bit different on the front - the brown went all the way across the front but the knob was in the same place and exactly the same. I loved the sounds of the water it made but it couldn't wash anything well so everything was scrubbed before it went into the machine. "Whisper Clean" is a big fat lie, that machine wasn't even remotely capable of living up to either of those claims. Remarkably, that Hotpoint was run nearly every day without a repair until she replaced it with a KitchenAid KDI-20.

Hotpoint!

We had a very simular but in portable. (our very 1st dw)
only difference was it had 2 buttons one for rinse only and one for normal. Only one cycle. Ours has a rinse aid dispenser that you had to unscrew. It was a noisy sucker - but I liked it. When we moved we got a built in model hotpoint that was a GE cross breed in 74.

Was this a pure Hotpoint model or a GE design?

Pure Hotpoint, nothing at all like GE's I saw several of these and very similar in apartments around UT when I was there going to school in Austin from 1973 to 1977. pals down the street lived in a brand new apartment (circa late 1973 to 1974) and they must have improved it some. Panel was a bit more stylish, smaller knob, actually had short and normal cycles on the panel. Was a little bit quieter and actually washed a little bit better than the one I had down the street that was from like 1966 to 1968. Very noisy but since this was my first apartment, naturally I didn't prewash, just scraped good. Somewhat of a disappointment at times, but if you knew how to load the glassses in the top, wawsn't the worst I've sued.

I remember these builder-model bottom of the line Hotpoint dishwashers from the early 70's. When we moved into our new house in '71 many of the houses around us had this dishwasher. My parents upgraded to a Maytag belt-drive dishwasher. My grandmother had this same dishwasher when they moved to Florida in '72. I remember it had a great sounding fill, which reminded me of an older solid basket washer.

Nice find, I sure hope some can save it and give us some good pictures of this machine.

Having lived in many college towns

I have seen many of these or similar models. Am I crazy or does this look westinghouse like. Did westinghouse outsource to hotpoint for their models. Some of the inside is a bit different, but very similar.

Allen, nope, not at all. I've used BOL Westys and Hotpoints form this timeframe and they were not the same or evgen cousins. The westinghouses actually performed better and had much better rack arrangement. I always did find it fascinating the Hotpiont top rack resembled a KA top rack.

sounds just like a "Disposall".

Yeah, talk about a definite roar when washing. And when finished pumping out the water, it's still very loud. It's a cross between a freight train and 18-wheeler in my books.
