1974 Maytag A407 motor pulley

I've seen a few posts on here about how these pulleys sometimes wear out. Is it all that common? I've just ordered a spare set of FSP belts for my machine and am wondering if I should change the pulley while I can still get one? maybe keep a spare water injector and pump around as well?

Thanks to the experts here, we found out my motor pulley in my 1984 511 was a 2 piece that had separated and made an annoying noise. I found a real Maytag repairman that replaced it with a new 1 piece and it runs just like it did when it came out of the box new.

MT used a 3 piece pulley from 1956 till the mid 80s when they tried to save a few cents and went to a 5 piece pulley for a few years, they had too many failures on the cheaper 5 piece pulley and switched back to the 3 piece pulley.

 

If you have a MT washer built around this time period take a look and see if the pump drive pulley looks like the larger pulley that is always the two piece design, if you have one where the pump drive pulley is 2 pieces it might be wise to replace it especially if any looseness can be felt. Otherwise don't waste your time changing a motor on a MT, as they NEVER wear out.

Thanks John. I was wondering if the sheave in those motor pulleys wore or not over time slipping like they do. I'm used to repairing Toro mowers that are known for the PTO pulley wearing as the Personal Pace traction feature slips the belt for different speeds like a maytag belt was designed to slip. But the Toro pulleys are know to wear from a "V" shape to a "U" and no amount of tension on the belt makes them work correctly when that happens. Good to know I was wise not ordering the pulley with the belts. I'll check the pump pulley as well thanks.
