hey guys, i recently changed the belt on my 1980s GE dryer, been fine for months, i went to dry a load today, and noticed it started squeaking, when i took the drum off it looks like the older ge dryers have a dry bearing, i am certian the noise is coming from the bearing in the back of the dryer, i am wondering if i could put some grease on it?

Detergent-free oil only.

Go to your hardware store and get some 3-in-1 designed for electric motors. Comes in a blue bottle. Costs less than $5. It's your best friend. Grease the bearing and you can kiss it goodbye.

i figured it might ruin the bearing putting grease, thats why i posted on here first, but does anyone know much about how these bearings work? i dont get how they can last as long as they do without using any grease or form of lubrication at all?

It had oil at one point, but it's since dried out.

See the link below for an explanation of how they work, how to service/refurb them, etc. The video is for a motor bearing, but the dryer bearings are the same thing.

Do not use grease!

The bearing is made of nylon. Once they wear down they squeak. The replacment is very inexpensive and fairly easy to put in. Remove the drum & push the old bearing out. The new bearing comes flat. You fold it into a tube & then push it into the opening. Then put the drum back, install the retaining clip & reassemble the dryer. The bearing will last another 20 years! Good luck!

thanks for all the advice, this is my first filter flo set! in the next year i am getting the new speed queen top loader as my daily driver and use the filter flo for things like dog bedding, nothing gets rid of dog hair like the filter flo.
