Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

!80 degree???

Can we get a schematic for your KUDS25 machine and see if it can't be retrofitted with a higher temp rinse thermostat as well as a new high limit protector? Maybe John L. or someone else can determine or verify if those thermostats were snap acting thermostats or thermistor type which will determine what the control board wants to see in order to progress through the cycles.

If thermistor driven it may be harder to adapt than if it uses snap action tstats.
If they are the latter, then getting different ones should be easy by just searching our stashes of parts.

Tappan Reversa-Jet

A 1965/66 Tappan Reverse-A-Jet.

Ahead of its day in many respects. The Top-of-the line model had reversing wash arms for top rack and bottom rack. Folding rack dividers, fine particle food filtration, console light, and self-latching door.

Received praise from Consumer Reports saying the Tappan, "washed perfectly."

They indicted it would have received a "check-rating" (an indication of highest overall quality) except the power of the spray, from the upper wash arm, sometimes tumbled glassware in the upper rack.

Back when KA machines offered Sani-Rinse, one gallon of water was heated in the sump to 180F, then circulated. Consumer Reports measured that the temperature of plates in the lower rack reaced a maximum of 150F. It was not a heating while circulating 180F like the 220 volt Kenmore dishwasher of the 70s or the gas Preway.[this post was last edited: 12/15/2021-09:16]

Hopefully in 2022, I'll actually get them over the border into Canada.... I already have waiting for me the elusive GE SU70T with the integrated, rapid-advance timer as well as a 30-inch Youngstown horizontal Jet-Tower dishwasher.

BUT, if I could find a GE SU80 30-inch Empress, preferably with the power-assist opening/closing mechanism....

I absolutely NEED to find an early 80s TOL KM Sears Best electronic dw. I know they aren't as good as most of what everyone here is looking for but...
and most have long since been replaced with, well... probably something worse and are now recycled into the fender of VW Jetta but I just have to have it.

John and Jeff had a customer who ran into a problem with the Sani-Rinse heating the water above 180F. The resulting instantaneous heating of the air in the tank when the pump started blew water out under the door. An adjustment had to be made to close the gap between the heating element and the thermostat so that the water was not heated to such a high temperature.

High heat in dishwasher

The higher the heat of the wash water, the more wear and tear on all the parts and the dishes.

I remember when I used to pick up discarded dishwashers from the 70s. You could always tell the rare people who were so anal that they used a high temp rinse all the time. The black plastic pump parts were often pitted and turning gray, if it was portable the hoses would have heavy wear and cracking, the shine was off the porcelain interior, and the plastic was literally wearing away on everything. It wasn't rare to find a hole worn into the bottom of the tub where the excessive hot water mixed with detergents can eat away at the tiniest of nick.

The Sani Rinse was only one or two minutes of circulation long. I can't imagine what high machine temperatures do to the hoses which again, are exposed to the hot water for only a minute or two for drain. I have seen damage to the hoses on portable machines from greasy kitchen atmosphere. Generally there are other places on the machines to prove the poor cleanliness. The wear you are describing is more like the people who rinse all of the food soil away before loading the dishes then going mad with detergent and long cycles. I have been at parties where the steam billows from the sink as dishes are scalded before being loaded into the machine.

Yes could be that too, if their water heater in general is cranked all the way up to like 160, 170 or beyond....

The damage is even worse because it's excessively hot water all the time.

I've seen the delay on those sanitizing rinses take a while to bring the temperature up.
