Whirlpool Thin Twin

So we were on our way to visit my sister and down the street was a garage sale. Sitting there was a Washer and Dryer set, Admiral and this Whirlpool Thin Twin. So we stopped and looked at it. The owner said the washer worked, but the dryer would not get hot. I looked in the dryer and pulled out the filter in back of the drum, it was full of lint, I mean, 2" thick fully packed of lint. I told the owner but he said he wanted $20.00, and I was thinking I wish I hadn't said anything, he'll probably want more.

We grabbed it and later I tried it out using 120 volts, although it is a 240 volt unit. I just set up a plug with the neutral at neutral and line one to line one, and neutral to line 2. The washer would spin on this combination, but no rotation of the dryer. I looked at the wiring diagram and reversed the wiring on my plug and got the dryer portion to rotate and heat up. I think the lint was causing an overheat condition and shut down.

Control Panel

This is the control panel. So I have a question, this is a Direct Drive machine, can I lay it on it's side? Now I want to take this to our cabin, not the full size Maytag set.

A Decent Machine

This is essentially the later direct drive little portable washer with the portable dryer partially turned upside-down and bolted together. Small capacity and I think the dryer is still a 110v unit. It uses 220v but one leg is for the washer and the other for the dryer with a shared neutral. Basically it lets you operate the washer and dryer at the same time. It's great for small loads for 1-2 people, better than a Frigidaire unit larger capacity or not. I made the same adapter for my LK set, I can run both from a single 220v outlet in the exact same manner this machine does. I guess this machine to be 1992-ish?

This is a good compact machine they still make the same washer. This dryer does have a 3600 watt 240 volt heater and the machine is not designed to run on 120 volts. They do make a 120 volt version it has a switch on the control panel that makes you chose between using the washer or dryer only. The Question of laying washers on thier side keeps coming up I don't know if this will ever get put to rest. You can lay any top loading on its side, front loading washers are another matter they should have the shipping braces in them before laying them on thier side. This machine was made the 11th week of 1999.

Thanks for the help on this unit. I'll quit asking about laying washers on their side. But, I just want to make sure, and I know I will get the right answer here!

Yes, the dryer heater is 240 volt. The dryer motor uses one leg and the washer motor uses the other leg, to help balance the electrical load. Since I am doing the testing on 120 volt this had me mystified at first. With an electric dryer, after you figure out how to hook up the plug it will run pretty well on 120 volt, although taking a long time to dry. On this unit you have to wash and then change the plug configuration to dry. I plan to add a 30 amp. 240 volt plug where I want to install it. Actually I have to add water and drain, the full hook up. It is for a family summer cabin and many years ago when we stayed there for the summer, my mother would take the laundry to a laundramat. My father really didn't want any appliances there. But I want a washer there to do the occassional load.

220v

I had always thought that these just split the 2 legs of the outlet for the dryer and washer. How does it "share" for the heater? I guess the schematics would tell. I've been wrong all this time.
