Love the older Philips machines, particularly for the way they launch into a spin cycle with a full tub of water. Plenty of splashing, and despite having no distribution phase, surprisingly little vibration. One of my friends had a Variatronic AW096 (I think?) dating from '80-'81, which I believe is older than the one in the pic above. Was still working when he got rid of it, and he did voice his regret when the machine taking its place died after just a few years. Live and learn.
The Hoover is very similar to the machine an ex of mine had, a slightly newer EcoLogic 800. I agree, it does lack that certain something in terms of styling. The sounds and action are the same, but even so, square door = "proper" Hoover!
As for the vintage Zanussi, I'm guessing this is the same design of machine that later appeared with a black control panel? When I was at school one of the Home Economics classrooms had one of these, and it was virtually silent even when spinning. Tons of programmes too, for what looked like such a basic machine it certainly had everything covered.
