A couple questions if yall don't mind...

I have recently noticed on my 1983 ge ff and my 1979 hotpoint rim flo today that the water coming out of the recirculation nozzel during wash cycle it will just all at once go way down to a small stream of water coming out! The fist thing that came to my mind was that the pump was going out! On the ge ff and hotpoint rim flo washers the pumps r the same im sure u all know that lol but wanted to throw that out there, but these pumps have a small hole in the side and when the pump is going out water will seep through this hole. So I took the back off and water was not coming out of the small hole. So idk if the pump is going out or what, is this normal for it to do this? I hope someone can help...

my filtertlo and HP rimflo have always had a steady stream from the flume-you may have a lint blockage or something...I you have leakage from the weephole on the pump,the seal is failing and pump will need replaced soon.Bad shaft seal is about all that goes wrong with filterflo pumps.

Since you specifically stated that no water is coming from weep hole, my guess would be some kind of blockage at the pump inlet, like a stray sock or other such nonsense. But there are a lot of Filter Flow fans here that will chime in soon.

Thanks guys, but what I can't figure out is my ge ff has only done this twice and between these times it's been a few days. My hotpoint rim flo only did this once which was yesterday and that's why I decided to create a thread and mention it to u all. It's crazy I have 2 washers at the same time doing the same thing.

oddly enough.....no two pumps flow rates are the same.....there have been weak ones, and one with full force....and you can't tell just by looking at them, it's just an oddity among pumps......

a few things you may want to try first.....

remove and inspect all hoses for any blockages, this also may mean you have to remove the inner tub to check for any foreign particles that may, on ocassion block the inlet for the filter from the outter tubs port....

inspect pumps inlet/outlet, for anything that also may be blocking, or restricting water flow...

worst case is you may have to replace the pump, which may be working fine....a few of us have come across ones that for some odd reason, will pump out the tub, and then create an air-lock once the spin spray starts, no rhyme or reason as to why a certain pump will do this, but it has happened....put a new pump on, and all works fine.....

If during spin it drain as it should so is not rubber coupling (check it), or you got a coin, lint, or garment label blocking the hole and or getting into pump, or your pump got bad for some reasons... may also be hose blocked from some lint....
Lucily pumps for GE and Hotpoint are still widely available out there, job takes 10 minutes if you have the right tools (wrench)...

All I got with my pump was it leaking from the small pump hole, it started making weird sound before going out, but always got water recirculating as it should....

My hotpoint washer hasnt been doing this since the first time, which was when I created this thread, thankfully. I think ill have to take the hoses off the pump and inspect. The pump acts like it is fine, it does everything its suppose to just that one time the recirculation water level went way down so i turned the washer off and started it again and there was no problem! As for my 83 ge ff i havent been home to do laundry since last weekend, but as soon as i do ill let everyone know if the problem is continuing or not!

I forgot to include in my message that during spin cycle both washers do fine. I do have a extra drain hose connected to the drain hose that connects to the pump on my ge ff. Could a longer drain hose cause a pump to go bad?

Off the wall question...

The only reason im bringing this up and even thinking about this right now is because i found this on ebay. Its the clutch punch to remove the 1 or 2 speed clutches on ge and hotpoint washers, right? I was thinking about replacing my 2 speed clutch in my ge ff later down the road when i can get my hands on a new one at a decient price! This is the tool i will need to remove the pin right? Also is all the parts here that i would need, is this the full kit? Don't mean to ask so many questions but when u never have experienced working on a ge or hotpoint clutch, i figured heres the place to start! Thanks everyone!

Doug, reply #8 about the extra drain hose. Is it possible you have created a siphoning situation? Of course that would not explain 2 separate machines with similar symptoms. Do they drain to a laundry tub or single stand pipe? alr2903

Do the pumps on your machine work in both directions?

years back when Hotpoint toploaders were more common this was an issue I came across a few times as in the recirculated flow was really weak and after switching off then back on would be fine for a few cycles.
Turned out the problem was THREADS caught around the internal flow diverter when the pump was taken apart and the threads cleaned off it would be back to normal. I am assuming that the pumps on your machines are similar they do look alike.
Inside there is a rubber flap that closes the hole in the pump not being used over time they can become weak and not flip over quick enough or as I said get threads around this stops them closing the opposing side and you lose pressure.

alr2903-my ge filter flo washer with the extra drain hose on it, and my hotpoint rim flo has only 1 drain hose on it, drains directly into a single stand pipe. Ozzie908-never heard of this flap ur talking about, im sure ur referring to the filter flo pumps right?

Filter Flos never had a flap on their pumps.............

some of the newer ones with electric pumps did, or backflo preventers in their hoses....but these are not filterflos

the early solid tub GEs did have a diverter flap in the pump-looks a lot like a later filterflo pump but is centrifugal with the inlet port a hole in the tub the pump mounts against-the rubber impeller whacks the flap to drain or filter position depending on rotation.

Ok I was about to say... Lol I thought that ozzie908 was maybe talking about the electric pump that newer ge's have. Started to get confused there for a min. As for the pics I posted of the clutch punch tool set, does this look like the tools I'll need to remove the pin on the top of the ge ff washer clutch or can u just use an Allen wrench or something that is very small and pointy?

you should be able to get a suitable pin punch at a good hardware or tool store-forget the exact size needed.Because of the way the clutch shaft is clamped to the motor shaft,it is common to find quite a bit of runout of clutch shaft/clutch;i corrected this on my filter flo for extra smooth(but still loud)operation.
The pump on the british hotpoint"filter flo"washers is very similar to the early solid tub GE filterflo washers including the diverter flapper.

Ok thanks this helps a lot! I'll look at a hardware store n see if I can't find a clutch punch! Would it just be called "clutch punch set"? And it dont have to be from ge? The 1 I found on eBay is $5 plus $6 shipping I wonder if they would be cheaper or same price at a hardware store.
