One of my favorite Kenmores designs !

Anyone know where this fit in the line ? I'm pretty sure it's from the 1972 or so era. So the 800 was in the line at this time. Was this one below or above the 800 ? It has all the features but uses the alphabet design/ no think temp selection system like the Lady K just without the auto timer stop system. Does it have a full panel light ? Ed

Yes it has a panel light. Kinda makes you think what the TOL looked like, this is a 70 series.

as for the maytag, reverse racks? I have never seen one like this, they are not common around here. matt

Reverse rack, meaning the plates and pots go on the top rack and the bowls and glasses go on the bottom. You can pretty much put anything anywhere and it'll all get clean. Maytag used this design for 20 years (early 70's to the early 90's).

You don't see them because they're all probably still in use. Mine turned 19 years old this month. Ran every other day and not a single repair.

That's strange, it makes me wonder again about regional differences with appliances. If it has a porcelein tub, I rarely see anything but Ka's. Some WP's, some Hotpoints, but no maytags. Does anyone have a date on the mayatg? matt

Original direct-drive Maytag dishwasher there! Hard to find parts for, but great dishwashers none-the-less. Rolled off the line in December of 1971. IIRC the noisy belt drive set-up came later around 1975 that lasted through the late 80's.

hey matt,

on my way to cleveland tomorrow to see larry, talked to him today, very nice man! got aseal for the g.e. waiting for me and a new motor altho this motor seems fine actually! got the upper impeller off last nite (see sep post) and he's got a lower impeller. so the g.e. will run like new again.

he said he has a variable speed clutch, new in box for rapidry rollermatics. i don't need it on mine but he has it if anyone is intersted. gonna take model numbers of all my machines to see what he has.

listen i am interetsed in that maytag dishwasher if you still have it later this year. don't have an old vintage maytag yet.

if you know of any place in cleveland area i might find parts for the rollermatic, especially a bellows please let me know. would like a spare. larry did say he may have a water (outer) bellows but inner bellows is defunct.

I disagree about the cleaning ability of the reverse rack. I use mine regularly, but I found that pots and pans on the top rack must be centered in the top rack over the tower. Even then, occasionally a few pans are not spottless. Also, I find more dirty silverware with this machine then say even an In-the-door basket on a whirlpool. Also, a lot of grit seems to pass through the filter on mine....

Sometimes I wonder if the lower arm is turning too fast, but this would only be a guess by my ear!

I have this Maytag dishwasher in a portable, a very good machine and surprisingly, much quieter than the noisy belt-drives of later years. They do clean very well but good scraping of the dishes is important, as evidenced by the dried food in the bottom of the tank! They are a PITA to work on, portables must be up-ended to get at the pump/motor mounted in the rear right corner of the machine. Built-in models had to be disconnected and pulled from the cabinet if problems arose.

I had a reverse

rack Maytag (the portable version of the very model shown here) for 21 years (73-94), and it was the best cleaning dishwasher I have ever used, so far.

I never had to prerinse. I scraped, but never rinsed.

My biggest design gripe was the cutout for the wash tower.

I'd adopt it, but I have NO room.

I never pre-rinsed with my reverse rack Maytag - only scraped the dishes. And I only ran the dishwasher when full which could have been 3-4 days (since I was single at the time) but still everything got clean. I never had a problem with the silverware not getting clean either. The cutout for the wash tower would have been my biggest gripe also. I did like how all the tines on the upper rack could be folded down to accommodate large pots, etc.
