A List of the Best Washers and Dryers? Parts Vendors

I've seen individual recommendations for and against particular brands and models on posts.

But I haven't found a list of the best (and worst) models. Anyone have a link or can create such a list that also explains what makes them great?

As a relatively new member, a word in your shell like ears; there have been more than a few *ahem* spirited debates over "best" or "worst" washing machines/dryers. It is all in the archives and easily searchable.

It's like making roux or corn bread; everyone has their favourite and will fight to death in order to defend. *LOL*

Pick one, Maytag, Norge, Frigidaire, AEG, etc..., and you'll find contained in archives some rather lively debates.

what your searching may not have ever been posted before......

using the suggested searching techniques in the Search-A-Lator can be of help as well.....

when I joined, it took me weeks, if not months, to go through all the archives and photos, youtube vids, collections, etc.....and that was only 3 forums at the time.....now look at us, well over double the forums, and members......

best advice, keep searching, if not here, other sites as well.....but always the chance you will never find your answer...and that's with anything....

Parts

Aside from persons coming here to advise/list parts they want to sell (see Shoppers Square archives), there have been a few discussions on parts.

There was Modern Parts House,Parma, Ohio for a start. However the very knowledgeable owner Larry Ullmo, passed on a few years ago. IIRC his wife and children took over the business. IIRC however the store went through a "cleaning out" with many things simply thrown away.

Again you'll have to search the archives which can be tricky and exhausting since "Parts" alone will bring pages of hits. However over the years there have been several good "stashes" found. Such as a Frigidaire dealer somewhere in the South that had an entire warehouse of NOS and otherwise vintage parts along with appliances.

Good volume of parts threads will be those seeking a specific part; for that people usually chime in where the thing can be found, if at all.

My favorite?

I've always been partial to the Maytag brand, even though my dad was a Frigidaire factory authorized service tech, and I took some Frigidaire classes. To me, nothing beats a Maytag, even the Norgetags were OK, in my book. YMMV.

I have extra space in my house and would like to have a couple of vintage washers and dryers. On craigslist, there are sometimes freebies, but they're damaged and I would need to make an quick decisions whether to get them. The time involved is faster than the response time from forum members here, so if I can look up parts quickly or call the vendor, I can make the decision quickly.

There are any number of online parts sources that handle new-stock items.  NLA/old-stock parts is primarily eBay.  Searching a part number via Google or choice of search engine sometimes brings up something.  Or long-established storefront sellers that may not be online, known by one's own local access, or referral from someone who is aware for non-local sources.

Online sources offering search by model number and resultant breakdown diagrams are a starting point, although databases are sometimes purged of older models (1970s, 1960s, and 1950s).  Otherwise the choice is check www.AutomaticE.org for service literature relevant to a given model or ask on this board.

Just pick them up. If they are in need of too much work, you can always part them out, wait to find parts, or send 'em to the curb.
