For the last couple of months I've periodically put an ad on our local "Swap Shop" radio show looking for a gas stove for our basement.  Last week, I got a call from a guy in Merrill that has a 1949 Maytag Dutch Oven gas range for sale that he has restored.  The asking price is $150, which I think is more than fair.  He was going to use it in his home, but decided to restore a Monarch wood/gas range for his kitchen instead.  I went to look at it this morning, and it's GORGEOUS!!!  It originally came to WI from PA, and those people decided it wasn't going to fit in with their lifestyle/decor.  It is practically immaculate.  The only fault I found was that the original broiler pan has surface rust, and looks to be pitted too.  He does have another broiler pan that will fit though.  It's not a big deal, I don't plan on broiling with it anyway.  It also has the deep well burner, and original pot.  I think it has found a new home in my basement.

Maytag Dutch Oven CookBook

Get yourself the CookBook that goes with this ranges. They have surfaced in eBay, and Amazon, some in near mint condition! It gives directions and hints in using the range and great meals utilizing cooking with the gas off and the cooking well. . I Have made many of the other recipes and can say there is only one of the many I have tried, that I would not make again.

When I told my wife that I had looked at this range she informed me that she wants something with a bigger oven and 4 burners.  So, even though I would love to have this range, I guess I have to start looking again.  BUMMER!  This particular stove has the burner dials on the top of the backsplash w/ the damper lever on the back, in between the timer and oven dial.

24" oven

The oven is 24" wide and deeper that most standard ranges are today. If you have both oven racks you can bake four 8" cake layers at one time staggering them in the oven. and can understand the 4 burners over the 3 and the cooker well if the pan is not in great condition. Not often do replacement pans for any of these cookers surface for sale even used.

Three rings

Tim

I dont know a great deal about these, you certainly sound disappointed not to be getting it. If three rings is a deal breaker how about a low cost portable induction unit to make a 4th as and when it is needed - surely can't be all the time. From what I have read on here they are not as cheap in the US as they are here (and some are REALLY cheap) but perhaps a quick look on ebay might let you track down one at low cost. The link is not for your purchase but to demonstrate just how cheap they can be here

Just a thought

A portable induction unit also gives the advantage of another technology to play with, er, use.

There are also cheap (much cheaper than induction) portable electric stove type burners. These, I imagine, are seriously limited by our 120V. But I imagine they'd be useful for some tasks.

Then there are electric fry pans, slow cookers, etc. One can never have too many appliances...only too limited counter space!

I'm looking for an older gas range that still has pilot lights for the burners & oven.  My reasoning being that if the power goes out, we could still cook a hot meal.  Our kitchen gas stove has electronic ignition, and while I can light the burners with a match, the oven is useless without electricity.  Plus, it would be nice to have an extra stove available in house at holiday times.

I Have a!!!

O Keefe and Merritt Hi Vue range , I will make you a deal!! It works great and also has a griddle in the middle between the burners.

Kenny that Wards to me sure looks like a Tappen of that era.  Not a bad price either.
