Too Anxious to Wait

So guys,
Are you building, modifying, replacing the cupboards that were on the wall? What's the plan for stage 2?
I had friends who built an all electric Gold Medallion home and moved in 1968. She had the same systems but the oven wasn't installed over the burners. It's cool how you can slam the lid of burner guck if the Pastor's wife shows up for a home visit!

BTW, what World's Fair does the tag refer to? I'm assuming the NYC fair, and not the Seattle fair? If memory serves, the Flair (and the Princess phone!) had something to do with the Seattle Century 21 Exposition.

I just read the booklet and it is chromed lined and it makes special note to NOT use caustic cleaners "LYE" They recommend, for excessively greasy ovens, to use 1/4 cup household ammonia and 1/2 cup of water in a glass container. Place the container in a slightly warm oven and leave overnight or several hours then add soapy water to the solution and wipe out the insides.

"Too Anxious to Wait"... We are now building the side cabinets and there will be a cabinet over the oven and a couple of shelves on the side of the right hand cabinet. We'll install under-cabinet lighting as well. We're debating on whether to put doors on the side cabinets and if so would we like to have glass doors!

This is a fun project BUT I can't wait for it to be over!! :-)

Is it hot in here or am I just blushing!! :-) OOOPS...no. I think it's just a hot flash!!!!! We did have a pretty fantastic crew involved and I don't just mean looks :-)

Hey Dan, The tag says Better Living Center. Home. New York Worlds Fair 1964-1965. I think that we had said, earlier, that it was 1963-64. OOOOPS!

Hmmm, sounds very tempting Rich, and I LOVE to cook/roast/bake/broil too, but if I had that stove I would probably never turn it on or touch it because its too damn beautiful!
I know I'd cook on something that nice and would be sure to have something boil over or spill, and make a total mess of it!
All kidding aside I think the new stuff is absolutely stunning, and I look forward to seeing what your other surprise is.

I would probably never turn it on or touch it

I know that the first time that I cook on it will be a tiny bit sad. It's against my nature, as a colector, to use something that is MIB but I guess the fun is in the use!!!

using old stuff...

Hey Rich,
I know exactly how that feels, as collectors we want to keep the stuff nice and preserve it.
HOWEVER: What are we saving it for? Posterity?? What happens to all this stuff when we are gone? Will someone else have the same appreciation for this stuff we do? Sometimes I stand in my basement and wonder where all the STUFF will go once I'm gone. To me its 30+ years of my life invested, to someone else its just a room full of old vacuums. (4 years ago I drew up a will, specifically for Jack and for the collection, just in case...I could care less what happens to my house or anything else)

I have a couple of vintage Hoovers that came to me unused, as well as a Sunbeam Mixmaster 11C and a Sunbeam coffeemaster. All unused, mint condition. The Sunbeams are displayed on my china cabinet, still unused.(I have a Kitchenaid Mixer that I have grown quite fond of, and have no clue how the Coffeemaster works!)The Hoovers? I decided to use them occasionally, because thats what they are for.

You are absolutely right, the fun is in the use, so use that stove, enjoy it, treasure it, and don't feel sad.

I just love the pull out burners. Those look like heavy suckers to move :-) Thanks for the picture!! Was this in your family or did you buy it? If it's the latter, did you have to do much work on it? What is the inside of the oven like?

I SO wish we had found one like yours instead, for a couple of reasons:

1) it would have been MUCH easier installation (as Greg and Bobby can attest to!!), and
2) I really, REALLY, like the pull-out feature!!!

We could have pulled one out of the house nearby where one of Rich's uncles used to live, but it would have needed a LOT of cleaning, and there were some mold issues since the house was uninhabited for a while. A shame, really.

Very nice unit!!!

Rich, I bought the "Fabulous 400" off of Craigslist in Denver and had it shipped. It was expensive, but we don't see many cool gas stoves out here in the NW (probably because of the cheap electricity).

There was a bit of a drama when it arrived, as the upper hinge on the oven door cracked during shipment and was an intregal piece to the control panel. We were able to fabricate a new holder, however, so all is good in that department.

the only things that don't work are the thermostaic burner, the roast meter, and the oven indicator lights. (Anybody want to come to Seattle and work on it? :-)

The oven is chrome, except for the bottom, which is enameled metal, and comes out for easy cleaning.

And yes, it is heavy.

Chuck, The 400 is nice, but that stove of yours wins out in the style department. Plus, it was a World's fair endorsed stove, so what's not to love?

Once all the installation is done, you'll love that stove and a covered cooktop is as glamourous as a pull-out, so Enjoy!

I now remember when you got that. The hinge reminded me. I remember my aunts and how stylish I thought it was when I was a child!! It sat between a Yougstown Kitchen sink and a slant front Westinghouse washer. I LOVED spending time at this aunts house !!! :-)

Sorry that it has taken so long for me to reply. We are stil working on the remodel (everything has to be hand built and we are doing it ourselves!) and I hope to have pics next week! We just installed yet another vintage appliance that came in todays mail! It's something that I have wanted for quite a while.
