Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

LOL all these stories crack me up.

I had forgotten, but DADoES helped me remember that I too used to put towels or other items on top of the agitator then start the tub spinning. But unlike DADoES or others, I was TERRIFIED of an unbalanced load (GE): The horrible whining strained motor sounds, the agitator weaving about like it was going to throw up, the increasing tempo of bang Bang BANG against the cabinet...aiyeeeeeee! Scares me even today to think about it.

That reminds me of these dreams i had

One night i dreamed that our whirlpool washer was on spin cycle. I opened the lid and i saw a blur then i left it open and went over to the couch and it went bang bang bang bang bang bang bang then it made a craking sound and it was on its side.

another night our washer went on sipn cycle and i went into the bathroom and the house was vibin

Another story

My mum was..... well lets not go there, anyway i was doing a load of landry and it entered spin cycle and i stoped it to watch it and my mom said oh this is done and took the shower curtain out and said go do the dishes, i went and while cleaning dishes i heard this BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG i went into the laundry room and the washer was totally off balance and on hi spin i opened the lid, lucky it had a spindle brake or it could of been worse

Steve B,

It's a portable and I have the Whirlpool sister too, both are belt drive portable machines which could be rolled to a sink or made into a permanent installation.

For some reason, the Whirlpool is feature laden than my Kenmore. My kenmore is BOL, one water level, three cycles and temperature must be made at the faucet.

The Whirlpool Convertable is a deluxe due to the fact that it has three water temperature, three water levels and I think four cycles.

Both are 24" wide with standard tubs.

Here's a picture of the lady....

$1000 down the drain

There i was at my friends house. We were bord so we watched her mums $1000 front loading whirlpool washer wash. We then got boerd of that and watched tv and then i heard it go BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANGBANG and it had a 900rpm spin rate so it wiggled and tipped fowarard and CRASH!!! pop pop, then we cut the power and set it up. The cover cracked the control panel was destroyed. i dont even know if it was fixed yet

Cleant.- Larry.

That is one beautiful machine!
And in Coffee or what ever they were calling it back then.
They even kept with the general shape of the Whirlpool consoles of the time.
I have never seen these kind of portables before, and you have 2 of them, wow.
So it is 24" wide and on wheels, but I can see that it is deeper than the portables that followed which were actually less than 24". You say it is "standard" capacity. I'm wondering what the suspension is in these machines. Are they hung with 3 rods like the full size machines or did they use the springs from the bottom.
Cool.

JAxsunxt- my grammar..

Oh, I should be the one to comment. I looked back on my post and I spelled several items wrong.

I guess my illusions of self perfection are shot.

Suspension

That machine is simply a smaller version of the full size belt drive with essentially the same suspension. There is a mechanism to allow it to be portable. There is a handle in the back that one uses to lower the castors to move it around. When you want to wash, you raise the castors so the machine actually sits on the floor so the automatic leveling legs work.

I can still remember the time I did a double load of towels, pushing the towels around the agitator as if they were in a Frigidaire 1-18 and I used Downey for extra softening and as we all know about the 4 minuets it takes to drain/strain a Kenmore!?!?

Well......, it took the full 5 minuets for the machine to ramp up to speed and that beautiful sound that the water makes while hitting the outer basket and smelling the aroma of the rinse water being drained into the kitchen sink just thrilled me with joy doing laundry!

If my mother knew that I've done this to her machine, making that motor scream, she would kill me!
lol.
;-))

I happen to have one of these machines for sale in gold. It is a fixer upper. It needs the mechanism for the castors fixed and probably more. I think it is the Kenmore version. If anyone is interested, Email me and I will get more details for you.

Storyette(s) & two cents worth

I remember vividly my Grammie Covert plunking Salvo
Tablets into her trapezoidal windowed Westinghouse a
'59 or so I think; ahh, laundry so severe!!!
Didn't any body else slowly pour a cup of water on top of the
rubber knobby topped Km's to enhance the spray rinsing?
Beautiful Wp & Km standard size portables CtofNY; why do I let those slip through my claws! Too many washers; not enough space!
I hope there is a future convention. Robert can paraphrase
Francis Ethyl Gumm: " I know what we'll do!! We'll stay up all night!!! We'll run them all!!!

Future Convention

You & me both!!! I watched the Convention 2002 video and it looked like a blast! Can't wait till we have another one...YAY!

SHOOT!!!

I was on my bike and i went down to the back of a value village and there stood a whirlpool washer portable it was in great shape. inside & outside. but the next day it was gone

as a lad...

When I was little Mom & Dad got on the dishwasher band wagon and bought a used @59-60 Hotpoint portable-one of the first ones with the spray type action. One day I thought I would help it by dumping a bunch of palmolive down the center of the sprayer. I don't have to tell you what happened. Ma yelled at me...
25 years later my bimbo neice did the same thing. This time I was smart enough to add some salad oil to cut the suds...
