Does anybody have any opinions on these two products?

I tried them once before as a `bleach boost' to liquid detergent but the suds just went crazy. I have now found a liquid detergent which produces very little suds (Tesco non bio, believe it or not) and would like to try Ace again. I don't want to waste my money though if Ace etc will suds like crazy with any product on a regular cycle. I'm currently using powdered oxygen bleach additive (oxi-clean`baby') and get great results with no extra suds. I dissolve the powder in a jug and add it through the drawer about 20 mins into the cycle; I still feel it's best to let the detergent do some prewashing of stains then add bleach. But it's a hassle to dissolve the stuff manually and chuck it in, which is why I was considering liquid oxygen bleach in the form of Ace.

Any opinions greatfully acknowledged

Thanks guys, Nick.

Well

My great Nan used to add Vanish Liquid to boost her Surf Lemon in the Servis Rainwave she had but then that machine needed all the help it could get.
I cant say the vanish did much tho. her whites were still not the best and some stains didnt come out, mainly greasy gravy etc etc off table cloths.

Mum is on some Tesco NB Liquid at the minute and I noticed the other day the lack of suds in the LG too, but she uses it mainly on colours so im not aware of the whites performance.

Ive not seen/used Ace since the year it came out but its no doubt had several reformulations since then, Mum got a bottle for fun I guess and it spent ages at the back of the cupboard and most probably used for washing something else down like the kitchen and utility floor.

I know im not being fair to these products but im sure you know me by now.... the pound something you spend on an inwash booster and a lesser priced reduced quality/ownlabel detergent I feel I may as well buy that box of Persil or dare I say it.......

Ariel Bio powder(yes its doing a great job on that white shirt with a short soak and a mix of a few cotton tumbles before re setting to a wool wash for the reminder, my synthetics section is not working on the Hotpoint)

and just have done with it.

Apologies this is not meant to upset you or any of the "try it and see' people here I know im stuck in my ways and pretty biased but just my feelings.

Good luck with whatever you try Im sure something will work.

Hi Nick

Thanks for the input!

I agree with you 100% about spending the extra on a label product and having it do just as good a job. I totally agree that the stain removal of Tesco NB liq is almost non existant, but like any NB liq IMO. It's not even my fave scent, Persil NB gets that prize. But way too sudsy. Ariel NB liq would be my second choice but that too can oversuds, as can Fairy which also smells like grannies.

I know NB liq in any format is probably the worst cleaner, but that also makes it the kidest to fabrics and probably to the environment?? Why always use the toughest product just on everyday sweat and stuff. I accept it as a detergent and add other stuff when I want stain removal.

The reason I'm trying out this way is because I'm going through a `one product for all' phase. A non bio liquid is a good compromise as it can be used on wools and silks, blacks, colours, whites.... I'm aware of course that ideally blacks shouldn't be exposed to brightener, though the lack of bleach is probably good, and I'm aware it may be a little alkaline on wools and silks compared to say Persil Silk and Wool. But if you use less of it on these fabrics it's fine. Being a liquid it's also great for pretreating and handwashing, and is effective on greasy stains because liquids tend to perfom better on these types of stains. (Powder is better at muddy type stains)

It is therefore in my opinion the best one for all product.

Where it falls flat on its face is bleachable stains on whites and colours. This is why some people think liquid cleaning is `poor', it's because it doesn't have bleach. So I need to add it to washes where there are such stains. I quite like adding a heap of powdered bleach as then, you also get some of the benefits of powder cleaning along with the liquid. It's just not that convenient.

My ordinary line up is three products. A powder or tab for whites, a liquid for colours, and a gentle liquid for wools etc. Three things to buy, three different scents. In terms of price, the Tesco stuff is so cheap to buy, especially when compared to Silk and Wool (for my taste the scent is a little too strong anyway) that if you add a little bleach when required I really don't think the price would be any different to the `other' way of doing it. Plus you have one scent for all and less crap in the cupboard. The bleach and softener I'm on right now are fragrance free.

Just giving you my current faddy thoughts, probably by next week I'll be back to the old system. Mind you, I have used 3/4 bottle of the Tesco without deviating to anything else in my stock. Pretty rare for me!!!

I guess my main concern is the insides of the machine, but then I do use the full range of temperatures, do maintenance washes etc.

Thanks again for your input Nick, feel free to counter-argue I like healthy debate and won't get upset lol it's not personal

Never needed to

Anytime I've used any mainstream washing powder / liquid on sale here I've really never had any reason to add any kind of wash booster to it. Persil, Ariel, Surf, Daz (hardly ever use), Bold, Tesco (normal range).. all seem to remove any stain.

Most of the time I use a colour detergent, don't even find I need the non-colour variety.

I stear clear of non-bios though, those enzymes really do work!

For wool/silk : Woolite machine wash beats dreft handsdown. Wool is much softer and holds shape much better with it. Although, Dreft has a nice smell.

Will probably dump this idea. The sound of the little ball clonking round on vigorous wash cycles is driving me crazy. Back to Persil tabs I guess.....

Ecover oxygen bleach is streets ahead of the others as it is pure sodium percarbonate. Many "oxi" products are between 50% to 25% washing soda, which means one can get very little bleaching power per dose. While it is true oxygen bleaches work well under alkaline conditons, most laundry detergents already provide good conditions for proper oxygen bleaching.

IIRC Reckitt-Benkiser used to sell either Vanish or Ace as "Spray n Wash" "Pink" laundry in wash stain remover on this side of the pond. Came in tablet, liquid and powder form. The tablets and powder were oxygen bleach combined with enzymes. While the liquid was enzymes, but not sure if it contain bleach as well.

Interesting to see what's actually in some of these products in terms of how they don't / do need wash boosters:
