How long do agitator dogs usually last before needing replaced? I was just curious as I came accross a video on youtube last week that showed how to replace them.

The dogs for our Whirlpool DD machine lasted about 10 years before they needed replacing. I think the reason they needed replacing is that Karen used to grab the agitator by the top and swish it back and forth a few times to mix the detergent in the water before adding the clothing.
This was the problem which led me to this website. We called a few repair places and some said to just "junk" the washer and buy a new one, others said the job would be around $300.00. Based on the advice offered here, I bought a FSP Agitator Overhaul kit for about $25.00 and did the job myself in about 20 minutes. Replaced the dogs and the seal. Easy.
They are still holding up. But we don't use the top of the agitator to swish the water around anymore.

Agitator dogs are the camlike parts used to move the auger part of a dual action agitator in only one direction(make it turn)while the lower part of the agitator with the base vanes oscillates back and forth.Dual action agitators are used in WP,KN and even some other makers models of TL washers.They are subject to wear.The surface in the auger part wears also-ideally the dogs and auger should be replaced together during DA agitator overhaul.

Agitator dogs replacement
You only need the kit with the four drive dogs 98% of the time costs less than 10 dollars. Grabbing the top of the agitator and moving it back and forth will not hurt it at all you could stand there for a year doing that and not cause any damage. The plastic material used to make the dogs just deteriorates over time and after aprox ten years needs to be replaced.
