...with squat toilets? Don't know if they are still common in southern Europe, but when I was just a bairn they were. I travelled much as a child and used many road houses - the things I saw are still vividly etched into my memory. Of course they are the norm throughout much of Asia, the Middle East and don't necessarily have toilet paper, let alone hand dryers or paper towels either. If one is lucky they might have a rubber hose or a small pail with a scoop that is used to flush away and clean one's self.
Now, as far as public facilities go, I like to touch as little as possible. Everything should be automatic, from the doors to the taps and flushing mechanisms on toilets. I am not a germophobe, though I draw the line with public facilities. I, too, prefer paper towels for reasons already stated by others here.
