Al Lewis "Grandpa Munster" Passes On

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

That show was one of my favorites as a kid. I still catch it sometimes in the evening. :) It was the "real" reason I got up early for school every morning.

Mr. Al Lewis was a resident of our very own Roosevelt Island.

It is a very small island, with the island of Manhattan [downtown NYC]to the west, and Queens County (geographically situated on Long Island) to the east.

For many years (if not decades) the only access to the island by public trnasportation was by Tram-way (think ski-lift cable cars suspended by wires). Alas, a subway station was added which many think killed the charm.

There is a bridge to Queens for vehicular traffic.

Note: It is the only place to live in New York City with an address like-

625 Main Street
New York, NY

Which may not see odd to you. But "Main Street" in New York City is BOUND to turn a few heads.

Little Eddie Muster and the beauty of the family, always called him "grandpa" (which he was to them). Lots of married couples for ages have called themselves "Ma" and "Pa" though they obviously are not parents of each other. Many families also refer to a family member as "Aunt So and So" and "Grannie Kettle", even though the person may only be the aunt or grandmother to the children.

As for watching the "Munsters", it was ok, prefered the "Addams Family" as they were more contential! *LOL* Sides how can one not like a family that has a member who can power an electric light blub by his mouth. Or a box with a hand called "thing"? Oh and who can forget "cousin It"?

I saw Lewis being interviewed on a TV show several years ago and he was as cranky and cantankerous as I expected him to be.

Launderess, I agree; The Addams Family was the 'thinking man's' freak-family show. But I still watched The Munsters, too.

As a kid, I enjoyed all the shows in which people created their own realities: The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Addams Family, Munsters, etc.

Another TV icon of my youth passes on. Hopefully he's happily hanging upside down in the afterlife with his trademark cigar between his lips...
