I went to a local thrift store today and spotted a vintage Amana Radar Range (I think it said "range") It looks like an early microwave oven, and was priced at $25.00. I wasn't crazy about the fake woodgrain 1970's looking cabinet, however the front panel was all chrome and looked pretty cool. Can anyone give me an education about these? I have heard of them over the years, but never paid any attention until spying this one today.
Thank you,
Rick

Amana

Hi Rick, See post #94 in the super archive 2004 +pic of my RR7 in photo collection.

The Amana Radarange, IMHO, was the most bombproof microwave oven ever made. So bombproof that, in the late 1970s-early 1980s, Amana advertisements showed a Radarange taking a hit in the front from a wrecking ball and not exhibiting one bit of microwave leakage.

It was that promise of reliability that made me plunk down $400 or so bucks in 1984 -- a considerable amount then -- for an RR-700 (electronic timer, rotary knob controls, temperature probe). Twenty years later and that nuke still works like a champ for me. They don't build 'em like they used to!

Thanks Guys!! And HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Thanks for the info, and links. I checked them out. The one I saw has pushbuttons and no dials and the three "start-stop-light" buttons along the bottom. One of those pictured looks like it I think. I will check the Radarange out further when the store is open (maybe Sunday) If it is still there I will buy it.
I just got home from a friends New Years party and do I EVER have a headache. Not from drinking,I only had one whisky and ginger ale. The cigarette smoke was a KILLER! Now that is one thing I don't miss about the "good ol' days" of the 1950's and 1960's. Everyone smoked back then. My clothes are on the back porch for now.... Tomorrow that 56 Whirlpool will take care of that problem!!

Happy New Year!!

The 61 Kenmore

Hi Kenny,
That 61 Kenmore needed spin bearings, clutch, ect. Plus it had a chunk blown out of the transmition housing. A couple of months after I got that machine from you,I was lucky to come across two belt drive machines. A 1956 Whirlpool Imperial, and a 1956 Kenmore TOL. During the rebuild of the WP I found a rust hole in the outer tub. So I ended up useing the 61 KM's tub in the WP,and while I was at it,added the waterfall filter system from the 61 KM to the 56 WP. The 56 Kenmore is in really bad shape. It had sat outside for quite some time, and shows it. The tub is "locked up" and the front panel, cabinet and the back and underside are VERY rusty. The machine had a leaky car battery sit on the top of the console for sometime,so you can imagine.... So I will be useing more of the 61 KM to help restore the 56 KM this spring.
I am a 35mm kind of guy,so I do not have any digital photos of my stuff. Bethann from Indy will be here next however, and she said she would take some photos to post.

Happy New Year!

Bought the Radarange!!!

I just want you guys to know that I went back to the thrift store the other day and bought the Radarange. After I had lugged it up to the front of the store, the clerk looked at it and said,"ten dollars please". The marked price was $25.00,however it was so cruddy looking the clerk must have felt sorry for me!! And it was CRUDDY!! My coat was dirty from rubbing against the front of the RR. I disasembled it as far as I thought I should,(pretty far really)and even had to use oven cleaner on most of the parts. Who ever had this RR was NOT a tidy person, and I am being kind!! Anyway, six hours later I have a restored 1979 Radarange!! I gave my old (newer) microwave oven away now,and am very happy with the fine workmanship of this new (older) one.It works great, even the clock. Thanks for all your advice guys!!
Rick
PS don't worry,Bethann took pictures!! (:
