Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

My Amana worked exactly 7 years, I must admit before the center seal leak it was a very good washer, as far as performance it excelled. alr2903

I remember seeing those machines with the white and blue knobs ~2000-2001 on their website. I have never seen one of these particular models in person. However, to my knowledge 93' - 99' Amanas I have always seen them with painted steel outer tubs. Some of these models that I have seen have had speckled baskets, painted white baskets, and SS baskets. The Amana machines that I'd get in ranging in manufacture years 93'- 99'would always suffer from bad tub seals, some bad belts, or the top lip of the metal outer tub would rust away(badly). If I compare the number of Whirlpool and Kenmore DD machines that I'd get in for repair vs. the number of Amanas washers, I can count the number of Amana machines on two hands. While I have serviced a least 200-300 DD machines. Sadly All the Amana machines except 3 that I can remember have gone to scrap. The tub seal is just too costly(for me) in money and time to repair, and then sell the machine to try to recoup costs. They are a nice machine, and they wash very well(when they don't leak).

Speed Queen vs Amana

Thanks to a post from Aldspinboy over a year ago, we have some comparisons between Amana and SQ.

Oh no...a leaker!!!...

I got one of these on CL for $50 a few months ago...
It's an ALW432, probably a big-box derivative of the 430, with the same features plus the extra rinse button...
Tub is huge, fills water to the very top, and has a vigorous agitation...
Regular cycle is fast wash/spin, and I use the Light setting, with a 9-minute wash...
Permanent Press cycle is identical to Regular, with the exception of a slow spin...
Delicate cycle is slow wash/spin, intermittent wash/soak, fabricmatic action...
So far, works great...if it dies, c'est la vie...
Use it for heavy loads, and save the delicates for the Westy Spacemate from the late 70's...
Notice the faux pas on Pg. 6?...
"2.5 cubic foot usable capacity..."
Otherwise, it's a very attractive brochure...

Thats not really a faux pas in the capacity. Its the capacity with the agitator in place. Many companies will say oh they have a 3.2 cu ft washbasket but thats without the agitator in place. Put the agitator in and its another story. Its the "usable capacity" that matters.
There isnt much different between the SQ washer and the Amana washer in the brochure. The only thing different is the wash tub. The SQ is porcelain on steel and the Amana is plastique. Everything else is the same, transmission, suspension, drive, cabinet and even the control panels. On the dryer its the door and lint filter area. Plus the Amana's had electronic sensors in the drum. SQ does not. The SQ dryer is thermostatic controlled drying. The temps on the dryer are rather high at 160 degrees for regular, 150 for perm press and 129 for delicate. But this dryer design does fly as far as drying times go.
My thinking for today's SQ washer is that they dont have the same seal issues. I can tell with my washer now since its not extracting all that well now is that I have something going with the belt/idler. My washer turned a year back in September of last year.

This has to be one of the last Raytheon Amana's as Raytheon sold Amana to Maytag in 2001.

This merger created the god-awful Amanatag washer. Which was worse than the Raytheon Amana. Thanks to VolvoGuy for the video.

Faux pas = my bad...

And here I thought the 3.3 cubic foot measurement included the allowance for the agitator...
If I were the manufacturer, I'd skip the "usable capacity" measurement, and stick with the tub cubic foot...
After all, the larger measurement does sound more impressive, and I wonder how much of the average public knows the difference...
Thanks Mike for clarifying...

Here's what my '97 pair from hell looked like, but I think my washer was a notch higher in the model line. While the washer had very effective long-stroke action, even with "Extra Rinse" selected as a matter of course the rinsing was poor, particularly with towels.

And yeah, the dryer ran way too hot and sounded like a bucket of bolts with sparrows flying around inside.

The painted top on the washer was so cheap compared to the porcelained center dial Maytag it replaced.

The machines pictured have never seen the light of day, because none of the knobs have yellowed.

Yes indeed that is the pair I bought in spring of 2000. They were from the "Goodman Era" of Amana - that is to say, after Raytheon had sold them off and before they were purchased by Maytag. I don't recall how long Goodman owned them - no more than 2-3 years. I never wanted that set. My local appliance store had a Raytheon set on the floor and I told them that was what i wanted. What arrived was a different story but at that point there wasn't much choice.

As I am sure everyone here remembers, the washer lasted 3 years before being done in by the leaking main seal. I will never forget that service nightmare - 3 different servicers and not one diagnosed it. They kept replacing the spin bearing every 5 weeks and of course insisted there was nothing wrong with the machine - the loud squeal while spinning was normal and it was I that was crazy. It was RepairClinic.com that hit the nail on the head and when I mentioned this to the last service person, he waved me away with the old "just because you got the info from the computer, that doesn't mean it is correct". Of course he offered nothing better, but...

The dryer is still chugging along, but runs a lot hotter now than when it was new, I am just biding my time on that one.

. . . I told them that was what i wanted

No, you didn't want a Raytheon Amana pair either. That's what mine were.

To add insult to injury, Consumers Union had just recently top-rated the Amana washer, which greatly influenced my decision. I let my subscription lapse when it came up for renewal.

Plastic Outer Tub

I suspect the integrity of the plastic outer wash tub on those Amana machines is the cause for the bad seals and bearing issues. Perhaps they just couldn't handle the wide temperature swings of Northern Winters. Hot Wash + Cold Rinse could swing 80 degrees rather quickly...
